Fall Soil Preparation
Soil preparation in the fall is advantageous in that the soil is typically drier and easier to work. In addition, the action of winter freezes and thaws breaks up clay clods. Annual flower and vegetable gardens can be prepared, as well as new beds/borders prepared for planting perennial gardens the following spring. Most gardeners add some form of organic amendment to the soil to improve its structure, and thus the aeration and drainage, for improved plant growth.
