Go Plants!

Growing Opportunities with plants program engages 3rd and 4th grade students in the exploration of plant science topics through a variety of science skill-building activities. The teaching strategy reflected in this unit encourages inquiry-based learning, the active use of science skills, and the use of creative and critical thinking skills. This includes the planting, growing and maintenance of plant materials in the classroom under grow-lights or in a window-garden situation.

Kit use fee - $30 (see list of items in the kit below)
Training dates - To be determined by participants
Training fee - $10 includes teacher's manual

You are responsible for picking up the equipment the week before you will plant your seeds. Under ideal conditions, this project takes approximately 42 days. I would plan for closer to 48 days. Often classrooms don’t have ideal conditions. It may take a little longer for the plants to have open blooms for pollinating.

Fall Session - If you begin the project between August 22 and September 26, your seed harvesting time will be before Thanksgiving. If you begin the project October 3 or 10  your plants will be ready to dry just before Thanksgiving. Your seed harvesting time will then be after Thanksgiving. I do not recommend planting any later. It is hard to keep plants watered over the Thanksgiving vacation.

Winter Session - If you begin the project between January 3 and January 16, your seed harvesting time will be before spring break. This will also allow flexibility during testing time in March.

Spring Session - The seeds must be planted on April 3 or 4 to be harvested before May 29.

I have 16 plant light units available during each session
