Minutes of the Master Gardeners of Union County May 24, 2000
        By Barbara Winner, Secretary

Many thanks to Lynn Emker from Greenwood for sharing her knowledge of shady perennials with us, she invited us all to see her new retail outlet located on Route 36, New Dover.

The graduating class of Master Gardeners was introduced and were invited to join the committees for the projects. A big thank you went to those who baked the cookies and other goodies, they were much enjoyed.

L. Morgan, President, called the meeting to order, and the secretary’s report prepared by B Winner was approved. M McDonald delivered the treasurer’s report and reminded everyone to pick-up their time cards to be turned in each month.

A. Allen, Vice President, reported that the officers had approved buying badges at $1.00 each for the Master Gardeners (also referred to as MGs in this report) to be presented at the July recognition banquet. Also, as a token of appreciation, the officers approved a gift of a potted plant for each to be presented to Marie, Kathy and Drudy, the Extension Office staff that takes messages and prepares our various written materials.

L. McConnell asked us to pick up one the Coordinator’s written monthly reports and reminded us of the Tri-State Conference coming up June 28-30, deadline for registering is May 30. She has a request from the Chamber of Commerce to develop a plan and oversee the planting of their entrance, this was approved. The Recognition Banquet will be help in Radnor on July 12.  B Lininger will present  the changes to the Handbook to us next month.  McConnell also requested us that evaluation sheets should be passed out and retrieved  at each of our presentation to the public, this helps us know what we are doing right and where we need to improve.

E. Hornsby presented the summary of the information gathered from each MG and asked for further comments to be passed to her in preparation for the mission and vision statement. She also reported that R Riffle, Risk Manager, was contacted about the Vet’s Memorial landscape plan. The goal is to have the plan ready for presentation next month and the first phase complete by fall of this year.

J. Westfall thanked his committee for the church landscaping and reminded us that there will be a tool sharpening clinic at B. Wade’s barn at the June meeting on the 21st (changed from the 4th Wednesday because of the conflict with the Tri-State Conference).

T. Carpenter reported for the Tour Committee that they still need some volunteers at some of the gardens. It was requested that each MG take five tickets to be sold at $5.00 each with the proceeds or unsold tickets being returned to the Extension Office by the Thursday before the Tour. The unsold tickets will be distributed among the gardens for sell the day of the tour. MGs volunteered to take flyers to libraries and retail outlets in each community. A. McElfresh was unable to attend due to a death in her family, a sympathy is being sent to her family from our group.

K. Forys said the Farmer’s Market Committee is on target with their project.

G. McVey invited more volunteers to join the fun at a planting of annuals and tagging of perennials at McCloud Park on June 3 at 9:00 a.m.

P. Herrmann has completed part of the work on our website with more to come.

Morgan requested help on May 25, 10:00 a.m., at Oakdale Cemetery with planting the landscape, and then adjourned the meeting at approximately 8:30 p.m.
