2001 Minutes
By Claire Loeffelman, Secretary
The May Master Gardener meeting was held on May 23,2001, 7:10 p.m. Ann
Allen, Vice President called the meeting to order at 7:10 p.m.
Announcements:
Laura spoke briefly concerning the Scotts Company request for Master
Gardeners to participate on a panel discussion. It will be held the third
week of June and to focus on houseplants. Please call Susan Herron at 644-7118
if you would like to join this discussion.
Laura then explained the Leaping Frog Award to the group, and since
the Frog was not present at the meeting, asked the Class of 2001, the latest
recipients, to jointly decide who should be awarded our green friend next
month.
Gardener's tip of the month - None this month (but see below)
Greenhouse Drawing - Laura passed around raffle tickets for all
present members for the drawing at the end of the meeting. Nancy Mead won
the door prize.
Mail and handouts can be picked up at the Extension Office or at the
meeting, (REMEMBER, your mail is in FRONT of your name card). Please remember
to pick up mail, since postage expenses can be avoided by the Office if
you can pick up information on a timely basis.
MG handbooks have been created for each of us and should be picked up
asap so Laura does not have to carry them to every meeting. They are currently
at the Extension Office.
Secretary's Report: MG received a thank you from the Extension
Office staff in recognition of Professional Assistant Day. After corrections
to the attendance reported in the April minutes were made, the minutes
were approved.
Treasurer's Report: Current balance is $ 3,038.57.
Timekeeper's Report: No report. May meeting attendees can log
1 volunteer hour for the May meeting.
Coordinator's Report:
Laura McConnell reported on the following:
MG Apparel - Laura described various MG clothing items for sale
and referred membership to information included in handouts. After realizing
that handouts had not been provided, Laura said the information would be
available at the next meeting.
-
MG Directories -directories have been placed in everyone's mailbox.
Additionally, a survey was done while taking attendance to identify who
would like an electronic version of the directory, sent via e-mail. Information
will be in WORD format.
-
Nominations for Master Gardener and Project of the Year - Laura
explained the process and the honor of this award. Completed ballets must
be submitted by June 8th.
-
HortLine Orientation - Volunteer time slots are available for various
dates this summer. Laura said the number of calls has been very light,
so you can catch up on your gardening reading and look over the library
offerings.
Old Business:
Adopt-A-Pot: This project is completed. Laura said that the
MG had done an excellent job. In all, fifty pots were planted around the
county and twenty-two windowboxes in Marysville. The Extension Office has
two pots on display.
-
Extension Office/Class of 2001 - Joan Phillips reported that the
planting design was completed, and the next step was to collect the plants.
Members would be getting requests soon on donating specific plants.
-
Heritage Trials - Linda Sanford reported that the tomatoes are ready
to be picked up. All participants have been called. Tomatoes were brought
to the meeting to facilitate delivery. She had information sheets and status
sheets to help each grower. She also has extra plants for anyone who would
still like to participate. Cost is $2.50 for two tomato plants.
-
Jerome Park - Jeanne Means stated that all the perennials have been
cleaned up, but that it has been too wet to plant the annuals. Will try
to schedule planting time prior to Memorial Day, due to the celebrations
on that day.
-
Marysville Public Library - Joy Bingman reported that Carol Grabor
will make sure display is placed at library.
-
McCloud Park - George McVey has met with the Mayor and maintenance
staff to discuss major park work that needs to be completed. Three trees
need to be removed, including 2 crabapples. There will be no planting of
perennials this spring, but some further development of the beds will be
considered, such as walking paths.
-
The Annual Flower planting will be June 2nd so please join everyone
and plant some flowers at 9 am that Saturday. The park looks pretty good
right now; George has applied Grubex and stated it needed to be down by
June 1st (so this is the Gardener Tip of the Month).
-
Milford Park Center- the design is being finished, with perhaps
another meeting needing to be scheduled to complete the process.
-
Oakdale Cemetery - Laura reported that this project is no longer
active.
-
MG Website - no report
-
New Resident Orientation - Nancy Mead -This project is complete.
There were 15-20 different displays at the school, and good interest in
MG. There needs to be efforts to attract a larger public attendance at
this show.
-
Plain City Beautification-Sue Hess stated that her committee met
May 9th and the current plan is a planting of red, white and blue perennials.
But the next activity will be to plant annuals this year, with the planting
to be done in early June.
-
Reference Library - Audrey Hall is continuing her work to classify
the reference library using the standard Dewey decimal System.
-
Tour of Gardens- Claire Loeffelman stated that the plans for the
tour are proceeding as scheduled Major parts of the tour logistics such
as handouts, tickets and publicity are ready to roll out. Tickets will
be sold only at the Extension Office after June 1st. Members who would
like to sell tickets to friends are welcome to come to the office to pick
up tickets. The top two ticket sellers will win a prize from the tour committee.
Claire's biggest concern at this point is ensuring that there are enough
volunteers for the actual tour day event. She explained that there is minimal
prep time involved and by working the tour most of a member's volunteer
hours for the year can be completed. There should be no concerns about
volunteering, since each garden coordinator will be meeting with their
volunteers before the tour to review duties and responsibilities.
All gardens are still in need of volunteers on tour day, so if anyone
is interested please contact either Claire or Laura.
-
Unionville Judging - Dorothy Coleman, one of the judges reported
that the first Saturday in May was the first judging. Audrey Hall, a MG,
was chosen as the winner.
-
Vet's Memorial -Ann Allen reported that an estimated eleven people
attended the scrub workshop. This workshop included the actual planting
of the scrubs for the landscaping effort, with everything getting planted.
-
Victorian gardening -Laura reported that this event is scheduled
for the last Saturday in May at the Painted Lady. There are still openings,
so please let Laura know asap. The fee is ten dollars, which includes lunch
and a plant.
-
Volksmarch - George McVey stated that there were approximately 60
people walking that day and all stopped by at McCloud Park at the MG booth.
-
Cookbooks - The books were available at the meeting for purchase
and will be at the extension office and at the garden tour for sale.
New Business:
Project Selection Committee - no report.
-
July Gardening Month -Laura has been approached to do the paperwork
to proclaim July Gardening Month. The membership discussed the concept
and supported doing the work. Joy Bingman will do the paperwork necessary
to present the proclamation to the Mayor's Office.
-
Steam threshers - Doug Brake volunteered to work with the Plain
City Exhibition to have a MG booth to promote the Garden tour. It was agreed
that it would be manned for the early days of the show but could be left
