Minutes of the Master Gardeners of Union County

Union County Master Gardeners met on June 23, 2004, at the UCSC building in Marysville, Ohio. Karen Long, President, opened the meeting by introducing Claire Loeffelman, Vice President, who ushered the MG’s outside where she gave a demo on  planting in unique containers and also showed us how to make a bubbling fountain in a flower pot.

Minutes: The minutes of the previous month’s meeting were approved  as written.

Treasurer’s Report:
Becky Rowe gave a treasurer's report. The treasurer’s report was approved for audit.

Timekeeper’s Report:
No report.  Karen Long reminded everyone to keep their hours up to date.

McCloud Park:
Mulching just about complete with a couple more hours of work on the 26th of June.  Things are looking good.

Garden Tour:  Chris Burnard noted that the tour is getting good coverage in the news paper and passed around articles on the gardens recently highlighted in the Journal Tribune.

The Pre-Tour will be from 1-5 on July 10 and we will meet at the Scott’s Headquarters off Scottslawn Rd.

Volunteers are still needed for the day of the tour.  Scotts especially could use some volunteers. Call garden chairs or Chris to volunteer.

Tom McNutt will do a TV spot about the tour from the Scott’s facility on June 30. That should help publicize the tour.

Maps and tickets will be available at all gardens.

Garden Party: Susan Lepard once again thanked all her committee members for all their hard work.

As of this date, 6 booths have been rented and some are offering door prizes for the day of the party.

There will be a book signing by Debra Knepke. 4-H’ers will be selling pop that day.

Maria Huber is charge of children’s education and she will be making chia people with the children.

A compost display will be headed up by Hank Edwards.

Pick-up trucks will be needed to transport some tables.

Everyone needs to be potting up their 10 – 12 plants now so they will be ready for August 21. Remember pot the plants in pots 4 inches or larger.

Adopt-a-Pot: All looking good with the new types plants used this year.

Liberty Park:  No report

Historical Society:  No report

Huston House:  George to meet with MG’s that signed on for the project. The plan is for a perennial garden to be planted there using plants from the Legacy Garden .

Children’s Education:  Jill Ricker brought in two puppets to be used in the grade schools to educated children on  horticulture. She is asking for volunteers to work with her.

Coordinator’s Report: George will be passing the leaping frog to Cindy Shuster who worked through thunder and lighting to organize the plants for Adopt-a-Pot.

Master Gardener apparel is in and ready for pickup. George has ordered some extra items such as hats visor and aprons.

Fair Booth:  Volunteers will work from  4-9 July 25th.  Sunday is set-up and Saturday August 1st is take down.

Garden Calendar Committee: Joyce Henderson is chair of this committee and it is suggested that we begin selling the calendars earlier in the year.

Legacy Garden: Eunice Hornsby made a motion that the plants at the Extension Office, (Legacy Garden), be used at the Marysville Library and Huston House.  Phil Jackson amended the motion to say that any plants leftover be potted and sold at the Garden Party. Motion seconded by Chris Burnard and passed.

George reminded the group that attending a Master Gardener meeting counts as 1 hour of volunteer time and ½ hour of education time. You get ¼ hour for reading the garden BYG or Veg-net. Travel of 100 miles is counted at 1 hour.

E-mail issues are still a problem with AOL users. George will check into this.

Memorial Hospital is asking for the MG’s to plant a flower garden at the hospital. Members are wondering what criterion will be used for planting gardens. More information will be needed on this.

New Business:

Memorial Committee: Eunice Hornsby said the committee is making the recommendation that in the event of a death  or serious illness of a member that a sympathy card be sent for everything. Joanna Kiser made a motion we accept the recommendation and  Claire Loeffelman seconded the motion and motion passed by members.

Ellen Evans is the person who will send cards to members.  Please contact Ellen, if someone needs a card sent to them.

Photo Contest: No photos turned in yet. Keep taking pictures of gardens.

Roberta Gordon offered dried gourds to any member wanting to make a craft out of them.

Next months meeting will be July 28 at the new Union County Agricultural Services Center at 7 p.m. We will have an ice cream social, with members making the ice cream and baked goodies.

As there was no further business to come before the group the meeting adjourned.

Respectfully,
Barbara Ramm, Secretary
