Minutes of the Master Gardeners of Union County

Union County Master Gardeners met on July 28, 2004, at the Agricultural Service Center on Rt.4.

Karen Long, president, welcomed everyone and then had George McVey give the group a tour of the new facility. We saw the many different agencies housed in the building and then ventured outside to areas that will be landscaped with special emphasis on one area as Wildlife habitat.

Minutes

As there were no corrections or additions, the secretary’s report was approved as e-mailed.

Treasurer’s Report:
Becky Rowe gave the treasurer's report. She was happy to report that the Garden Tour was very successful and with only one outstanding bill. The report was approved and put on file for audit. (If anyone would like to view the report, please contact Becky Rowe, Master Gardener Treasurer)

Timekeeper’s Report:
Mary Ann Haynes reminded the 2003 class members to get their hours in as many were short on their required 50 volunteer hours.  They should be reporting their hours on paper and put them in the Haynes mailbox at the Agricultural Center or they should enter their hours on line.

Old Business:

McCloud Park:
Lisa Anderson is the new chairman of McCloud Park taking John Jordan’s place.  She needs everyone’s help to keep things looking nice there.  Weed and Feed takes place the 2nd Saturday of the month.  The next work day will be August 14th from 9-12.

Garden Tour:
Chris Burnard thanked everyone for their help in making the Garden Tour of 2004 a success. 417 tickets were sold with a profit of $1,522.95.

Phil Jackson brought in a nicely done video of the Garden Tour that was viewed during our meeting.

Preparations are now in place for the 2005 Tour. A new chairman is needed for the tour.

There are a number of gardens that would like to be on the tour for next year.  A committee will be formed to look at gardens and judge whether they would be suitable for the tour.  Location and traffic problems would be an item to be closely looked at.

Chris was given a big hand for all her hard work on the tour.

Garden Party:
Cathy Weaver passed around sign up sheets to give the committee an idea of how many plants will be ready for the garden party.  Members are asked to donate 10-12 plants for the party.  Plants are to be brought in from 4-9 on Friday the 20th to the fairgrounds or Saturday the 21st from 7-8 a.m. All plants should be labeled.  Garage sale items are also needed at these times.

Mary Colatrella is collecting, panty hose, sequins, ribbons, glue, craft, and little eyes, to decorate the chia people for the children’s project at the Garden Party.

The next garden party meeting will be August 9th at 6:30 at the new facilities on Rt. 4.

Adopt-a-Pot:  No report
Liberty Park:  No report

Houston House:
Drawings of the area were submitted and the committee has plans to meet again.  No planting will done this year. Plans will be made this year for planting in the spring.

Historical Society:
They will be open during the Honda Homecoming and they will hold their Victorian Days in conjunction with the Festifair in Marysville.

Garden Calendar: No report

Legacy Garden:
A new Legacy Garden will be planted at the new Agricultural Center.  John Walkup is in charge of the project.  Plants will be moved from the old Extension office to the new one.  All the plants have a history or legacy with them. MG donated plants that were handed down from family members.  This will continue at the new center.

Leaping Frog:
On hold until next month when Cindy Shuster will pass the frog on to a deserving member.

New Business:

Photo Contest:
Pictures are still needed for the photo contest.  Place photos in an envelope with your name on it, but do not label the back of the pictures. Photos can be 4x6 or 3x5.

Coordinator's Report:
George called on Carol Mickley to display a huge sign made by the art department at the Marysville Women’s Prison. The sign will be used for the Farmers Market held every Saturday morning in Marysville.  It was suggested that we ask them to make a sign for the Garden Party.

George listed the following new projects that need volunteers. Sign up sheets are available.

New Projects:
  1. Person needed as a Power Point assistant for Master Gardeners of Union County.
  2. Garden Tour Selection Committee for 2005.
  3. Legacy Garden at new Agricultural Center.
  4. Recognition Banquet Committee needed for banquet on November 10, 2004, at the Allen Center Township Hall.  A plant exchange among Master Gardeners will take place at this banquet.
  5. Committee or committees for landscaping at the Agricultural Center.
George brought in a specimen of rust on a Hawthorne Tree. The rust generally will not harm the tree unless it occurs 2 or 3 years in a row.

Nominating Committee needed for the next meeting:  Miriam Carson said she would head the committee.  A slate of officers would be needed and the voting would take place in October.

The next meeting will be on August 25, with a Tomato Fest. Members are urged to bring in their best, worst, biggest, smallest, greenest, ugliest tomato. Also, food items made with tomatoes are to be brought in.

A thank you was received from the Jr. Master Gardeners for our donation to their program and another from the Marysville Library for the plantings done by Ben Runyon as his Eagle Scout Project with assistance from Master Gardeners.

A request from the Jr. Miss Program for a donation was turned down as it was not within our Master Gardener guidelines.
