January, 2002 Minutes

By Marsha Kiss, Secretary

The January meeting was held on January 23, 2002, at 7 p.m. at the Marysville Library.

Union County Master Gardener Coordinator, Laura McConnell, introduced the 2002 Officers.  They are as follows:  Ann Allen, President;  Karen Long, Vice President;  Marsha Kiss, Secretary; and Al Burnard, Treasurer.

Ann Allen, President, called the meeting to order.

The minutes of the October, 2001, meeting were approved.  (No regular meetings were held in November or December).

Reports:

Treasurer s Report:  $4,637.09 is the balance. Al explained to those present that there is a new reimbursement form to be filled out if asking for money back from the organization. Everyone was reminded that projects need approval before they can be reimbursed.

Timekeepers Report:  Nancy Mead explained the new entry system for keeping track of hours volunteered and also education hours.  We no longer will be using the old time cards to turn in hours.  Educational hours should be entered on one side and volunteer hours on the other.
A group of 5-6 people are being trained on how to enter the time and they will show the rest of the group how to do this. Nancy reminded everyone to look in their mailboxes for their accumulated time to date.  Please check these to see that they are correct.  If you have not submitted any hours, you will not have a new sheet in your mailbox.  If you find an error, correct it and return to Nancy. Hours start to accumulate once you have paid your fee for the MG school. Hours need to be in by April 30th. If you read an article such as BYGL you will receive 15 minutes for each one you read.  Please do not enter them until you have 1 hour.
You can also earn 1 volunteer hour for every 100 miles you travel attending a function related to MG. Continuing education and advanced training are the same thing.

Coordinator Report:
Laura showed some samples of MG apparel.  Turn orders in at next meeting. The members of the Class of 2002 were introduced and welcomed. The new class starts February 5th, @ 6:00 p.m. The new Master Gardener pamphlet was shown.  It was printed in black and white due to cost restraints. The  Northeast Regional will be in Ithaca, New York on July 24th-27th. Canada Blooms will be held March 13th-15th.  More educational events are listed in the red Educational Opportunities notebook. Ian Pasco (new MG class 2002) built a wonderful bookshelf for all of the books in Laura's office.  Many thanks to him for the addition of much needed space. New MG Directory now finished.  Please check to see that all information is correct.  Let Marsha Kiss know if there are any corrections. Gardening Thymes printed every other month.  Remember it is our newsletter so please assist Carol Rasoul with information. Laura informed the group that we will no longer be sending out mailings via e-mail and regular mail.  Too much duplication is being done.  Marsha passed out the new 2002 directory and asked that everyone sign how they wanted to receive their mail.  The choices are:  mail will be put in your mailbox to be picked up at meetings or at the Extension office.  Or, e-mail.  This will save postage and duplications.

Old Business:
Heritage Vegetable Trial:  Linda Sanford presented the information from the trial held last summer.  25 people participated, and 17 returned the surveys.  It seems the heirloom tomatoes bloomed first as well as set fruit the quickest.  All agreed they had plenty of fruit for table use.  Will not repeat this trial in 2002.  Barb Lininger will write an article for the newspapers on this.

Heritage Bulb Trial: This is ongoing and will not conclude for 2 years.

Tour of Gardens:  As of this time we have all the gardens chosen but we do not have a Chair or a Co-Chair.  Laura stressed the need to fill this position(s) soon or we would not have the time to assure all is finalized for a tour this year.  An e-mail will be sent requesting anyone who might be interested to let Laura know by 2-1-02.  The duty sheet was passed around and several people did sign up to be chairs of the individual gardens.  Discussion followed on ways to reduce the number of door prizes etc.  This might also reduce the need for so many duties for those who do chose to become involved.

Constitution and Bylaws:  One meeting has been held and the group is about half way through both.

Handbook: Linda Morgan has completed the updates for the handbook.  Copies of the 2002 version are in your mailfolders.

2002 Gardening Educational Series:  Fireside Dreaming .  This was presented by Al and Chris Burnard and discussed topics such as soil, climate zone, and, methods for reading gardening seed catalogs. Motion passed to accept the budget for the educational series.

New Business:
Ann asked the group about the MG contributing money (to be added to the money from the extension staff) to purchase something in remembrance of Laura's father in law who passed away.  Motion made and passed for MG to contribute.

Leaping Frog:  Linda Sanford gave a humorous account of her time with Frog .  She then announced John Walkup the next deserving winner.  Congratulations John!

With no further business, Ann Allen adjourned the meeting.  Those attending the meeting received 1/2 hour of MG education learning about the timekeeping procedure.

Attendance:  Ann Allen, Joy Bingham, Mollie Black, Doug Brake, Carole Stolte-Brouillette, Al Burnard, Chris Burnard, Dorothy Coleman, Terri Farley, Roberta Gordon, Audrey Hall, Angie Hatfield, Allison Hoopes, Eunice Hornsby, John Jordan, Mary Kinsley, Marsha Kiss, Barbara Lininger, Barb Matteson, Laura McConnell, Carola McMahan, George McVey, Nancy Mead, Jeanne Means, Merry Munk, Keli Oberst, Millie Pace, Jamie Perez, Joan Phillips, Janice Purse, Barbara Ramm, Steve Rausch, Linda Reamsnyder, Becky Rowe, Linda Sanford, Linda Smith, Bill Streng, Jim Westfall, Brain Wade.
