Minutes of the Master Gardeners of Union County
Volunteer Hours Earned:  1 Hour

Marsha Kiss opened the meeting and requested that George McVey and Harvey Goertz serve as judges for the Great Tomato Fest Contest.

Secretary:
Barb Jackson acted as secretary in the absence of Kim Mains. There were no changes or corrections to the minutes of the July meeting and they stand approved as submitted.

Treasurer:
Audrey Hall gave the Treasurer's report, stating that we had a balance of $8,887.45 in the regular account and $970.41 in the development account.

Project Reports:

Plant Sale:
Kathy Altizer was not able to attend the meeting.  Nancy Mead said that people could start bringing in their plants on Friday at 4 pm.   If you are working the sale on Saturday, please arrive by 7 a.m. The sale opens at 8 :00 a.m.

Garden Tour:
Miriam Carson stated everything went extremely well. Attendance was up. Over 20 people expressed an interest in becoming a Master Gardener. The educational display went very well. Treasurer, Audrey Hall, explained that we still have outstanding invoices, but at the current time income from the tour was $5,029.  Expenses to date were $2,142.76, leaving a profit of $2,936.24.

McCloud Park:
Patsy Bushdorf stated that she took photographs in August to compare to the pictures taken in the Spring.  Numerous changes were made including some tropicals. Things really look different. The west end, however, does not look very nice. There is no sprinkler system and the soil is very sandy. Therefore things dried out very quickly.  Mary Ann Haynes stated that Amber is doing a report on McCloud Park for one of her classes at Columbus State.

Legacy Garden:
John Walkup said the Class of 2006 has been very active planning a new layout. Things that they do not intend to use will be potted up for the sale.  George McVey mentioned that the Landscape Workshop scheduled for September 9 has been canceled.  The material is available to plant the NorthEast side.  However, we will not plant any perennials.

Festifair
Marsha Kiss welcomed anyone to volunteer the day of Festifair, September 9.  We will be located on the south side of East Fifth Street at booth #207.

Old Business
The educational presentations originally requested by the Dublin Rec. Center have been postponed until Spring 2007.  Claire Loeffelman will coordinate and ask for volunteers.

Leaping Frog Award
After being missing last month, the frog made an appearance. Patsy Bushdorf passed the frog to Claire Loeffelman, President of our group. Claire was not in attendance.

Coordinator's Report
George McVey stated that he had a request from the State MG Conference for a door prize donation.  Do we want to do this?  In the past, we were able to obtain product donations from Scotts.  After some discussion Joe Johnson moved that we give a donation, not to exceed $200.  Eunice Hornsby amended the motion to a value of $100. The motion passed. George will check with Scotts first, before any funds are spent. Woody ornamentals will be planted at the Ag Center on September 9. Volunteers are needed.

George said one of the ladies in the office questioned whether we should list financial details in our minutes which are posted on the web site. Discussions ensued as to the risk of such information being available. A general consensus was that while we are not required to post such information, any risk seemed rather small.  A rather humorous comment was made that since most of the members do not read the minutes, why should we be concerned about anyone else reading them.  In the end, it was decided to leave the treasurer's report detailed in the minutes on the web site.

George reminded everyone that each Master Gardener needs 6 educational hours per year in addition to the 10 volunteer hours.  He suggested one way to obtain educational hours would be to read the timely garden tips posted every day on the web site.  The Buckeye Yard & Garden Line is another educational opportunity.  Clark County MG is sponsoring “Fall Garden Practices” on September 5, 12, and 19. George will send out an email asking for nominations for Master Gardener of the Year and Project of the Year.  Nominations received will be voted on at the next meeting.  Deena Newell has completed a draft for a new brochure. She will send out an electronic copy for critique.  Eunice Hornsby suggested changing the motto back to the original “To Learn, To Teach, To Serve”.  Somewhere along the line, the order became switched.  Deena will check on pricing to print the brochure.

New Business
The annual banquet will be held November 8. Several individuals have volunteered to help out, but a volunteer is needed to chair the group. A wrap-up party for the garden tour and plant sale will be held Sunday, September 17, 5:30 p.m. at Little Tony's on Industrial Parkway.  Nancy Wells is working to finish the DVD, so it can be viewed at the party.

A deposit of $100 is needed.  Eunice moved to dispense the funds; Nancy seconded and the motion passed. A selection committee is needed to choose gardens for the 2007 Garden Tour. Mary Ann Haynes stated that the recipes from the container garden display at the tour were available. Nancy Wells stated that she will not be doing the DVD of the tour next year.

The next meeting will be September 27. Barb Jackson will give the educational presentation on garlic. Bring your photos for the contest.  We will vote on the winners in October.  The following individuals volunteered to form the Garden Tour Selection Committee:  Sharon Wade, Nancy Mead, Johanna Keiser, and Mary Ann Haynes.

George and Harvey announced the winners of the Great Tomato Fest Contest:
