August 25, 2004 Minutes

Minutes of the Master Gardeners of Union County

Union County Master Gardeners met at the Union County Agricultural Service Center on August 25, 2004, with the Annual Tomato Fest.

Claire Loeffelman, Vice President, opened the meeting in absence of President, Karen Long.

Claire suggested we all partake of the food brought in for the Tomato Fest and then Jill Ricker would present her puppet show.

Jill’s puppet show will be  part of an educational program to be used in the grade schools. She uses a puppet back drop along with a power point presentation.  For the evening's program, she used a caterpillar puppet to tell the story of the metamorphosis of the butterfly.

Persons wanting to help Jill with the educational program may contact her or George McVey.

Minutes

As there were no additions or corrections to the minutes they were approved as e-mailed.

Treasurer's Report: Becky Rowe reported that the garden tour came in $462 below their budgeted expenses.  The Garden Party is presently reporting a $2,078.56 profit on their sales.  There are a few outstanding items.
The report was approved and put on file for audit. (If anyone would like to view the report, please contact Becky Rowe, Master Gardener Treasurer)

Time Keepers Report: Members need to update their hours for the recognition banquet in November.  Mary Ann Haynes reported that for the year 2004, we presently have 141 members on the books. Of that amount about 66 are inactive.

Mary Ann mentioned the names of members who do have hours, but have not reported them.  George McVey or the Haynes will contact these members to get their hours in.

Anyone needing their passwords or I.D.’s contact Mary Ann or Amber Haynes.

If you need education hours,  here are a few ways to accumulate education hours:

Old Business:

McCloud Park: Lisa Anderson reported that the park is doing well with only a few annuals failing. Overall it looks great. Weed and Feed will continue at McCloud  Park on the 2nd Saturday of the month.  Lisa can use everyone's help. Anyone needing hours can pick up a couple there on the 2nd Saturday.

Garden Tour: The Garden Tour Selection Committee met and visited 7 different gardens and took pictures of each. They will met again on Monday, September 30, to go over the garden history profile sheet to see if some things need changed and view all the pictures of the gardens.

Garden Party: The Garden Party was a phenomenal success.  The rain hampered some of the preparations on Friday evening, but Saturday proved to be a beautiful day.

Cathy Weaver reports that over 1,000 plants came in.  Dutch Mill Nursery donated 50 day lilies and the Daylily Society donated 50. Scott’s donated a pallet of potting soil. Cathy Weaver said that the Garden Party will net about a $2,225.00 profit.  Special thanks went to Phil Jackson for parking his camper overnight Friday to watch the plants.

Volunteers are needed to call on the people that won the door prizes.

For next year, it was suggested that a clean up committee to be chosen as after working all day, the garden party workers were tired and could have used some help with clean –up. Leftover plants are in the parking lot for members to take home.

Adopt-a-Pot: Cindy Shuster reported that fall planting is coming up for the pots. This will take place the 3rd or 4th week of September. She needs volunteers. Please contact Cindy.

Liberty Park:  No report

Houston House:  No report.

Historical Society: Barbara Ramm reported a work day scheduled on Wednesday September 8, from 1-4.  This will be a sprucing up time for Victorian Days at the Society on Saturday the 11th.

Garden Calendar: No report.  After some discussion, it was noted by members that since we have had such a busy year and the calendar lost money last year that we dispense with the calendar for this year. Sue Hess made a motion to not do the calendar this year. Cathy Weaver seconded the motion.  Motion passed.

It was suggested at the beginning of the 2005 year, that the officers send out to the membership the list of the Master Gardener activities for the year.

Legacy Garden: John Walkup is in charge of removing the plants from the old Extension Office by September 17.  They will be brought to the Agricultural Services Center or put in containers and moved to a nurse garden until the Center can use them.  Please contact John, if you would like to help with this project.

Leaping Frog: Cindy Shuster passed the frog on the Cathy Weaver for all her hard work at the Garden Party who, then, through a totally unprecedented move said she would like it to go to Karen Mikols for her patience in working with the vendors at the Garden Party.

Coordinators Report:  No report.  George McVey was unable to attend meeting.

New Business:

Richwood Garden Club is in need of a speaker for one of their meetings in January, February or March. Jill Ricker has some power point presentations at the Agricultural Services Center all set up and ready for members to use. So anyone wishing to fill this volunteer position contact George McVey.

Committees:

All committees will need heads next year.  It is suggested that two heads are better than one, so co-chairman would help. The previous year's chairman will help the new chairman get started.

Due to the fact that the treasury has grown over the summer,  Sandra Lepard made a motion to reimburse Jill Ricker for monies spent on puppets and made a motion to give her additional monies to the amount of $350 to cover other puppets and stage supplies that she will need.  Al Burnard seconded the motion.

Hank Edwards volunteered to help make a portable frame for the puppet show. He has made these for other groups.

Jill thought as part of the puppet program that a craft could also be done with the school children.

Ideas were voiced for presenting programs to home schoolers and that a children's garden be put in at the Agricultural Services Center.

Claire announced the winners of the Tomato Fest Contest as follows:
Ugliest Tomato-  Cathy Weaver
Biggest Tomato – Hazel Lawruk
Best Looking Tomato – Harvey Goertz
Most uniform Tomato – Barbara Ramm
A reminder to all that the Ohio Master Gardener Conference, "Harvesting the Past Sowing the Future" will be held October 22 & 23 on the campus of the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center (OARDC) in Wooster, Ohio.

As no further business was to come before the group, the meeting was adjourned and we will meet again on September 22 at 7 p.m. at the Union County Agricultural Services Center.

Respectfully yours,
Barbara Ramm, Secretary
