.Minutes of Master Gardeners
of Union County August 23, 2000
by Barb Winner
Meeting was called to order by L Morgan, President
at approximately 7:00 p.m. She lead off by thanking all who came to help
with the landscaping at the church, and reminded everyone that there has
been a slim turn-out for this chore in the past couple of months.
She asked if we wish to continue to do this work for a free meeting place.
All votes to continue the landscaping for the free meeting place.
J Westfall thanked the committee for all their help.
The secretary’s report was approved and the treasurer’s
report was presented by M McDonald. B Winner reported receiving a
thank you note from L Smith’s family for the sympathy card, and changes
were passed for the Directory, with one addition since it was typed, G
McVey’s email address: (mark your directory’s) mcvey2@juno.com.
M McDonald reminded us about turning in our hours monthly, this meeting
is worth 1 volunteer hour, also another volunteer hour if you helped with
the landscaping.
M McDonald continues to work with Unionville Center’s
Beautification Project, with winners being chosen each month. There
is one month to go.
Thank you cards have been sent by the coordinators
from the Tour committee. Neither co-chair was available to provide
the results of the Tour.
R George was not available for comments on the
Historical Society project, nor was E Rees available for a comments on
the Banquet.
E Hornsby reported that the landscape plan for
the Vet’s Memorial is underway, a budget has not been determined for the
project. In the proposal, a bandstand and arbor were presented and
these are going to be costly additions. However, the committee is
hopeful that the monies will be forthcoming in stages.
B Gardner and C Stolte were happy with the turn-out
and the response of the “Day in the Park”. They recommend that
we continue this project. They received favorable responses on McCloud
Park and B Wade’s mailboxes.
G McVey thanked everyone for helping at McCloud
Park in his absence, especially J Westfall, who took leadership while McVey
was on vacation. He requested all who can to come August 26 at 9
a.m. for a clean-up just before the Labor Day Holiday.
T Farley and Tour Selection Committee are gathering
information on gardens of interest and plan a tour of these within the
next couple of weeks. The area of the search has been narrowed to Plain
City-Marysville areas, as Richwood already has a Garden Tour of it’s own.
It has been suggested that we plan to have the Tour at the same time each
year, the weekend after the Independence Holiday, the Chamber of Commerce
would provide free publicity for us. This was approved. S Hess
suggested that we leave some weeds and identify these for the Tour.
This was approved as well.
A school resource book, Gardening with Children
and Youth, was presented for our review with an estimated cost of $5.00
each or total cost of about $200.00 so that each school may have this Resource
available for planning various gardening/landscaping projects.
It was suggested the binder be changed to a 3-ring style for ease of use.
These were approved.
L McConnell, Coordinator, reported that she’ll
be traveling to the Master Gardener Coordinators’ Conference in Lansing
Michigan during the week of September 10; also, on September 26, she will
be in Columbus attending a meeting regarding the State Master Gardener
Awards. She will be available for us on Tuesdays 8:00 a.m.-4:30 p.m.
at the Extension Office and we may contact her on Thursday 8:00 a.m.
12:00 noon at her home. She is always available via internet.
McConnell reminds us that the Homemaker’s Tour
to Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens is September 26, she passed around
the Chamber of Commerce report noting one of our own, J Westfall, is featured
on page 4 for beautifying the flower beds at the Chamber. She apologized
for the photographer not appearing for our demonstration, and reports that
our website developer, P Herrmann, is moving to California. We’ll
miss her. She passed around information about “An Affair of the Hort”
from Inniswood Metro Gardens on September 22-24. McConnell
passed copies of her written report for each member to read and also requests
for volunteers for organizing the MG School 2001 and a committee for the
training of the Hortline 2001. Help will be needed for a brochure
promoting the Tour, it was discussed that we may expand the Tour to a 2-day
affair with local nurseries and other venders participating. Don’t
forget the special events at Chadwick on September 1-2, for details, check
the Extension Office.
McConnell also announced that B Smith nominated
C McMahan as the recipient of the Leaping Frog Award for this month.
She was chosen for her continued support via her many gardening talks and
attendance at state and regional conferences. It’s now her turn to
nominate next month’s winner.
A pioneer garden in Jerome Township has been discussed
and J Means will lead us in this project. Also, we are invited to
join the Chamber in a Winter Garden Workshop similar to our spring 2000
event. The Chamber has invited the MG’s to help with the Blooming
Union County project where the MG;s would provide ideas on plants and assist
with garnering donation for this project. C Stolte has suggested
that we develop a children’s garden on the east side of McCloud and
she needs help to develop this plan. There is a “Go Plants! 4-H Curriculum
In-Service” meeting September 12, 2000 for anyone interested in working
with children. A reminder was given that the Ohio Historical Society
needs old tools as gifts or on loan for their event.
We are beginning to become more recognized by
the community and many more projects are being presented for our participation.
A Project Selection Committee has been suggested, at present Dorothy Coleman,
Karen Long, George McVey and Jim Westfall are members. Any one else
interested?
E Evans has received information on cookbooks
for fund raising and believes that we can have these professional done
as economically as doing these ourselves. Our previous cookbooks
are gone and have been a good fund raiser for us. She will gather
cost information for us from two sources.
Morgan passed ballots for the Master Gardener
of the Year, and also requested each gardener vote for smallest, largest,
most red, most perfect and unusual tomato. Meeting was adjourned
at approximately 7:45 p.m.
Congratulations to the winners of the “Great
Tomato Festival:” Smallest, C Stolte; largest, M McDonald; most red,

of participation are at the Extension Office for all who participated,
as well as, a prize for the winners.
