Minutes
Education:
President,
Karen Long, opened the meeting and
welcomed guests from Delaware
County. Marsha Kiss introduced the evening’s
educational speaker. Meagan Laird,
President of the Marysville FFA Chapter, gave a presentation and
demonstration
on saving tomato seeds. After removing
the seeds from the fruit, they need to be placed in some type of cup,
covered
with water and sealed with plastic wrap. This
allows the seeds to ferment, a necessary process in proper seed
saving for tomatoes. Once all of the
seeds have settled to the bottom (usually about a week) you can drain
off the
water and place the seeds on a paper towel or plate to dry. They can then be safely stored in an
envelope. Be sure to remember to label
the seeds throughout the process.
An abbreviated business meeting was
held. Photos submitted for the contest were available for review. It is
not too late to submit your photos prior to the judging. Please
remember to check your mail tonight for the proposed revision to the
constitution.
Kathy
Altizer reported that the plant sale
was very successful. The only problem
was that we ran out of plants just a few hours into the sale. A
follow-up meeting for the committee will be
scheduled. Approximately 900 plants
sold, giving us a profit of roughly $1,900.
The Ohio Master
Gardener State Conference
is approaching. If anyone planning to
attend is interested in transportation, contact Nancy Mead. Other
upcoming events include the Master
Gardener Open House scheduled for the Ag Center on October 12.
Our Recognition Banquet will be held on
November 9. Invitations will be sent
out. Marsha Kiss requested that members
of the committee remain afterwards tonight for a quick meeting.
Jill
Ricker asked if there was any money
available for prizes in the photo contest.
Treasurer, Becky Rowe, stated that although nothing had been budgeted
specifically for that purpose, there was cash available. Income
for the month was
$2,819.40 (mostly from the plant sale) with expenses totaling $1,527.71.
Al
Burnard commented that educational
opportunities were available at the Farm Science Review.
Leaping Frog
Award
The
frog has returned! After disappearing last
month, she suddenly
reappeared in George’s office and was given to recipient Miriam Carson. Apparently, she had been in hiding due to
threats by Miss Piggy (related to relationships involving Kermit). While visiting with Miriam, the frog attended
the Marion Popcorn Festival, Affair of the Hort at Inniswood and
checked out
possible sites for next year’s Tour of Gardens. Miriam
awarded the frog to Carolyn Gibeaut. Upon
receiving the frog, Carolyn stated that
she felt the frog was ready for a rest and she expected the time spent
with her
would be relatively uneventful when compared to past adventures.
Mary
McDonald reported for the Nominating Committee. A slate of
candidates has been prepared for next month’s election of officers as
follows: President – Claire Loeffelman; Vice President
– Marsha Kiss; Treasurer – Audrey Hall; Secretary – Kim Main.
Prizes
were awarded for the Tomato Contest:
Ugliest – Jill Ricker
Ripest – Carolyn Gibeaut
Smallest – Jill Ricker
Biggest – Roberta Gordon
Best Non-Red – Deb Brown
Best of Show – Deb Brown
The
meeting adjourned, and
those present migrated to the kitchen to enjoy the results of the
tomato
potluck.
The next meeting will be October 26 at the Union County Ag. Services
Center. We will be electing new officers and voting on the proposed
revision to the constitution.
