.5 HourPresident, Marsha Kiss called the meeting to order. Secretary Report: Last month's (August 2007) minutes are on the web. No changes were noted. The minutes were approved. Treasurer's Report: Audrey Hall gave the Treasury Report. Income was $26.50 Plants sold at Fest Fair, $2,203 from Plant Sale. Expenses $20 Wine Tour $52.80 Plant Education $50 Thank You for the sign $261.54 plants for CYOC. Final balance $8,098.61. Old Business: CYOC - Eunice Hornsby informed the group that the perennial bed of 60 ft by 10 ft deep had been planted on a beautiful Sunday. There will be additional expenses coming through $380 for the project. The group is planning a workday of October 14 to clean up the vegetable garden. A wrap up potluck is trying to be scheduled to help review the project while we remember its successes and problems. Plant Sale - Nancy Mead indicated that though we did not have as many plants as in the past, it was a very good success. It was discussed to ask members to donate 10 plants to help cover their state fee next year through the plant sale. The educational displays and materials were also well received by the public. The hours worked well and pricing seem well received. The group discussed looking at 8 am to 12 pm next year since the plants seemed to move quickly. It had also been suggested to include a request for recycling the plastic pots as part of our advertising next year as we are usually in need of them. More trees and shrubs were noted for next year. The group had also discussed that we might consider donating something such as a bench to the fairgrounds for the use of the building since we had not been billed. Another suggestion was to sponsor some of the prizes for the horticultural contests during the fair. McCloud Park - Marsh encouraged members to be in contact with Patsy Bushdorf or Karen Long, if you are interested in helping with the park next year. They are looking for volunteers to take responsibility for a section of the park. Fest Fair - Marsha Kiss reported it was well attended and extra plants from the plant sale were sold. Vet's Memorial - Marcia Lee questioned whether we had any further maintenance obligation for the Vet's Memorial. We had agreed that it was the County's responsibility for maintenance including weeding. We just did the design. Coordinator's Report: George had received a speaker request from the Progressive Buds who meet at the Richwood Library at 7:00. The dates and topics are 2/12/2008 - Pruning and Composting and 4/18/2008 - Organic Gardening. Please let George know if you are interested in speaking on either date. The Union County Master Gardener Program is being honored by the Union County Chamber of Commerce Salute to Leaders Award Winner in the category of the Environment Award on November 19 at 6:30 pm. State Master Gardener Meeting was held in Columbus with over 300 MG in attendance. Millie Pace, Nancy Mead and George McVey attended from Union County. George shared some highlights of his tour of the OSU gardens and some speaker topics included Global Warming, growing/buying local food, debunking garden remedies. Also the State Program has an arrangement with the magazine, Fine Gardening that they will receive $10 for each subscription (Costs $29.95). George will be getting more details on this. George also shared that Nancy Mead will be exploring the State Master Gardener website during her upcoming recovery from knee surgery. The new site has many new features and updates that we will find helpful. George also indicated that he had received information on National Arbor Day and thought this might be an event in which we might consider expanding our involvement. He also brought up a possibility of reworking the Butterfly Garden area into a raised bed area to be used as educational projects. It might be an opportunity to foster a multi-generational activity between the seniors citizen group and 4-H group. The project would be run through the project selection committee to see our level of interest. New Business: Photo Contest: Hazel Lawruk reminded everyone to bring in his or her pictures by October 22. The three categories are Landscape, Flowers, Animals. The pictures can be 4x 6 and don't have to be framed. Be sure your name is on the back. Recognition Banquet: Faye Cox reported that the banquet is scheduled for Weds, November 7, 2007, at 6:30 p.m. at Der Dutchman. MGs are free but guests are $15. Invitations will be going out shortly. RSVP to Drudy or Marie. Leaping Frog: Amber Haynes passed on the busy frog to Nancy Mead for her hard work in making the Plant Sale a great success. Education: Meg Cryder shared her experiences with forcing bulbs during the winter months. She has had success using daffodils and hyacinths and crocus. A favorite is the "Jetfire" daffodils. Any bulb that is listed as good at naturalizing or forcing will work. Miniatures work well for displaying without an overabundance of stalk. She demonstrated the traditional method of placing the bulbs in pots of dirt and also her method of preference, layering bulbs and dirt in plastic bags stored in the refrigerator crisper drawer until sprouting.
