Minutes of the Master Gardeners of Union County
Volunteer Hours Earned:  1 Hour

Kim Main called the meeting to order in absence of  President Claire Loefleman.

Education:
In place of education time, at this meeting MG’s were asked to vote on their favorite photos for the Photo Contest.  Photos were divided into various categories and MG’s were asked to vote for their favorite photo in each of the categories. Hazel Lawruk and Jill Ricker will tally the votes and announce the winners at the Recognition Dinner in November.

Meeting

Secretary’s Report:
There were no additions or corrections to the Secretary’s Minutes and they were approved as e-mailed.

Treasurer’s Report:
Kim Main gave the treasurer’s report in absence of Audrey Hall. A $15 expense occurred in October leaving a balance of $10, 680.27 in the treasury. At this time, Nancy Wells asked for $50 to be used for the Historian Book and for the Leaping Frog Book, highlighting all our Leaping Frog Award Winners.

The motion was made to give $50 to for the Historian Record Books . Motion seconded and approved.

Old Business:

Dublin Recreation Center
The Center has asked for speakers to come and give a 30 minute talk at their classes in the Spring.  We have a few members that have signed up, but we could use a few more. These classes at the Recreation Center will be open to the public.

The MG Focus Group
They are completing their findings about recommendations for the Master Gardener’s upcoming programs and meetings for the 2007 year. These ideas will  be presented to the group at the January meeting.  The Focus Group felt they got great feedback from the members.

There will also be an electronic survey going out to members in the December/January time frame to get more input from our members.

Recognition Dinner
A discussion was held about the directions to the Raymond House for the Recognition Dinner. The Raymond House is located between Broadway and Raymond.  There are directions on the back of the invitation, but the road to the Raymond House is not well marked. Nancy Mead said she will have her cell on and members can call her if they get lost.  The address for the Raymond House is 22015 State Rt. 147 and the phone number is 246.4011. Members are asked to respond if they are planning on attending the dinner and to make sure they state what food they would like from the list mailed out.

McCloud Park
Karen Long and Patsy Bushdorf are working hard on plantings and landscape design for next year at McCloud. They want to thank all who helped clean up the park.  Patsy said all the tropicals were dug up and will be stored for next year.

Items of Interest
Nancy and Bill Well’s backyard was highlighted in the newspaper for being designated as a wildlife habitat. Roberta Gordon also has designated wildlife habitat at her home.

Tammy Rogers thanked our group for the donation to the State Master Gardener Convention.

George McVey was given information on those interested in alternatives to the ash tree that is now in peril from the emerald ash borer. Anyone interested contact George.

Marcia Lee brought in an article on 6 steps to growing garlic for members to take home.

George mentioned that Carolyn Gibeaut won the contest for the date and degree of the first frost beating John Walkup out by just a few degrees.  Carolyn won a Voodoo Lily.

Coordinators Report:
George listed a number of projects that need volunteers

They are as follows:
  • A study on natural pest disease and remedies.
  • Review the Backyard Garden Newsletter and present ideas to the group.
  • Master Gardener Website is being reconstructed and ideas for what should be included would be helpful to Drudy Yoakam.
  • A chair or chair persons are needed for the 2007 Garden Tour.  If  3 people would sign up to chair it, it would make the work so much easier.
New Business

Slate of Officers for the 2007 year was presented by Mary McDonald.
Marsha Kiss – President
Chris Bernard – Vice President
Carolyn Gibeaut – Secretary
Audrey Hall – Treasurer
A motion was made to accept the slate of officers as read and the motion was seconded was passed by members.

Miscellaneous
COYC still wants help next year with planting a garden.  Marcia Lee said this fall is a good time to go and prepare the area with peat moss or some type of amendments to make the job easier in the spring.
Vickie Jordan from the COYC will be contacted to see if the area needs cleaned up before winter sets in.

Proposals for next year’s budget will be gone over in December when the Finance Committee meets and then presented in January at the MG Meeting.

A discussion was held as to different ways to commemorate MG’s who have passed away.  Possibly a memorial area at McCloud Park. Members can bring ideas to the January meeting.

The Meeting was adjourned and all members were asked come to the Recognition Dinner on November 8 at the Raymond House.
