March 26, 2003 Minutes

President, Ann Allen called the meeting to order at 7 PM on March 26 at the Marysville Public Library. 

Education:    Chris Burnard presented a 30-minute demonstration on Plant Dyes.

Minutes:      The minutes of the previous meeting were approved as mailed.

Treasurer:    Al Burnard reported a balance in the treasury. He paid a bill in the amount of $310.00 for the seed packets that will be distributed at the International Conference.

Timekeeper:    Nancy Mead reminded members to record their volunteer and educational hours before the April 30th deadline for the current years report. 

Karen Long read John Hixon’s report as follows:
  • Several applications have been received for the coordinator’s position.  Interviews will begin next week.
  • The last class for the new Master Gardeners will be held Saturday and the exam will be given on Tuesday.  Attendance has been very good.
  • A place to have the April meeting has not been secured.  Suggestions from members are welcome.
  • Scotts has donated 198 skids of bagged Wildflower seed mixture to be distributed through the Soil and Water Conservation District.  Master Gardeners may take as many bags as they wish.  A sign-up sheet was passed around to the membership.
  • Volunteers are encouraged to sign-up for the Hortline schedule, which will begin in May.
Old Business:       
   
Garden Tour:  Chris Burnard reported that the committee chairs are secured, but volunteers are needed to serve on the various committees.  One garden in Richwood has canceled due to the health of the garden owner.  The theme for the tour is “Town and Country Gardens”.  Scotts has donated a nice gift to be presented to the garden selected as the “People’s Choice”.  Chris moved that a budget of $2,500.00 be approved for the garden tour expenses. Audry Hall seconded the motion.  Motion was approved.

McCloud Park: John Jordan reminded members of the first workday at McCloud to be held April 5 at 9 am – bring pruners, rakes, trowels, gloves & knee pads.

Adopt A Pot:  Audry Hall announced plans for the planting of the pots to be held on May 17. 
4-H members and Scouts will plant the pots under the supervision of Master Gardeners.Wave petunias have been donated and Linda Sanford is growing rainbow Swiss Chard for the pots.

Historical Society Heritage Garden:  Barbara Ramm reported that her committee has met and plans have been started for the garden. 

Recognition Meeting:  Roberta Gorden asked for suggestions of places to have the meeting. Roberta moved that a budget of $500 be approved for the event.  Susan Lehman seconded the motion.  Motion was approved.

Tribute for Laura:  Ideas were discussed for a possible gift for Laura to honor her 3 years of service as the coordinator.   Ann Allen also suggested a plaque be placed at the Extension Service Office naming all past coordinators (Nancy and Laura).

Memorial Donations:  Discussion was held on the matter of the OSU Foundation that manages the donations received on behalf of the Master Gardeners.  Eunice Hornsby will research the guidelines for the fund and report at next meeting. Ann Allen read a note from Todd Hoopes ' sister asking that her donation be used for the improvement of McCloud Park.

New Business
   
Junior Master Gardeners:  Sue Hess suggested that our organization make a donation to the Junior Master Gardeners to help cover the cost of projects and/or scholarships for 4-H Camp.  It was suggested that we ask Carola McMahon to submit a proposal for funds before a donation is made.

Leaping Frog:   Barbara Ramm presented the Leaping Frog to Joan Griffin for all the hours she spent last summer watering the garden at the OSU Extension Office.

Next Meeting:  The next meeting will be April 23 at 7 PM.  Place to be announced.  New Master Gardeners will be recognized at this event.
