Minutes of the Master Gardeners of Union County
Education Hours: 1/2 Hour
Volunteer Hours Earned: 1 HourVice President, Chris Burnard, called the meeting to order in Marsha's absence. Since the guest speaker was ready, the education portion was conducted first, rather than the business meeting. Education: Keith Scheiderer of Scheiderer Gardens gave an interesting talk on the new plants for 2007. He indicated that some of the plants he mentioned might not be considered by some to be brand new. He tries to test out the plants himself before offering them to public to see how they respond to our local climate and conditions. He first discussed various new shrubs available. He then proceeded to discuss various perennials and annuals. A listing of the various varieties he mentioned will be available to the membership. He also brought in several examples of plants for our review. Secretary Report: Last month's (February 2007) minutes are on the web and were approved. Treasurer's Report: Audrey Hall reported income for the month of $225 for Adopt a Pot, $240 for the State Fees, $41.79 from Marysville for McCloud Park. Expenses included $153 for administrative fees for copying the project signup sheets, and $41.79 for McCloud Park. The account balance is $9166.64. Ian Pasco asked Chris why that balance was so large and how that balance was going to be used. Chris pointed out that we had had several successful money making projects over the past few years and that as part of our upcoming calendar of events, some of the funds will go toward developing public educational workshops. New Business: This led to an introduction of a volunteer opportunity and a public education workshop discussion. Candi Scheiderer of Scheiderer Farms had already been planning a series of evening workshops on designing and planting containers for April (1 workshop) and May (3 workshops). She is willing to partner with Master Gardeners, if MGs will volunteer to help with the workshops. Our role will be as an extra set of hands to help attendees find, select, and plant their containers. The workshops will cost $5 plus the cost of the plant material. Those MGs attending will get educational or volunteer hours. A sign-up sheet was passed for volunteer solicitation. Old Business: Discussions on the Survey results and the new State fees were tabled until next meeting. We will address the state fee at the next meeting after we've had a chance to review the e-mail we had just received back from the state. Several MGs have given talks to community groups this past month. Barbi Conaway shared that she and Faye Cox had given a talk to a 4-H Club in Richwood. Barbi had presented the wintersowing information that she had recently shared with our group and Faye discussed bugs in the garden. They had 10-15 in attendance. Project Updates: CYOC: Ellen Evans gave an update on the CYOC Project. She and Eunice Hornsby had met the CYOC leadership and had set up meetings for orientations to the facility, site assessment and plant discussion and selection. The CYOC was thrilled with the catalogs and garden books that we were able to donate to their library. She also mentioned that donations of garden materials were coming along well. Union County Veteran's Plaza: Karen Long discussed that she, Mary McCord, Patsy Bushdorf, and Amber Haynes had developed the landscape plans for the Veteran's Plaza. She shared a drawing of the design with the group. The plan had been submitted to the Plaza Committee and it went over well. The county will be paying for the plant material. The next step in the project will be the planting day. She asked MGs to be available to assist with planting. McCloud Park: Karen Long also reported that 10 volunteers had turned out for the March Clean Up day at McCloud Park. The scheduled clean up chores were completed and we filled 20 large refuse bags that day. The next workday is scheduled for April 14 so please mark your calendar. Plant Sale: Nancy Mead shared that a flyer had been created, advertising the Plant Sale and will be included in all the bags handed out at the upcoming Delaware Master Gardener's Green Thumbs event. She also shared that it has been decided that there will not be any vendors this year but educational booths would be set up among the plants. Soil is again being donated by Scotts and will be stored in the garage at the Ag Center. She asked that we provide her a list of the plants that we plan on bringing to help with planning. She also pointed out that labeling will again be required and any plants coming in unlabelled will be set aside until the very end. Set up is planned for the night before the sale starting at 4pm. There will not be a dinner this year but breakfast food will be provided the day of the sale. Hours are 8am -2pm. Workshops: Chris Burnard shared that she has arranged for Phil Wolford to give a public workshop on Thursday, April 19, 7-9pm at the Ag Center on water features in the landscape. Phil is from Garden of Eden and had been the landscaper on one of the Tour of Gardens last year, the one with the waterfall. Ideas were discussed on how to advertise the event. Suggestions included getting an article prepared for the newspaper including pictures, if possible. George could also mention it in his upcoming columns. Toledo Trip: Everyone is reminded that the Toledo bus trip is June 16. If interested, call the office. Master Gardeners will have the first opportunity, and then it will be opened to spouses and guests. Tentative cost is $32.50 Susie Pasco shared that the Plain City Kiwanis are selling asparagus roots and horseradish starts. She will get the information to Chris so it can be emailed out to the membership. Seeds and Products: Chris had purchased seeds and products for MGs to try during the upcoming growing season. MGs taking the seeds or products are asked to fill out an evaluation sheet on their performance. Products included red mulch, red automatic watering tubs for tomatoes, water holding polymers and a wide range of new seed offerings. Seeds were selected for color to go with the theme of the August meeting, Kaleidoscope of Color, which is when we are asked to bring in the results of our gardening. Chris moved to adjourn the meeting. Marsh Lee seconded. The next meeting is April 25, 2007, at the Ag Center. Members in attendance:
