Minutes of the Master Gardeners of Union County
Education Hours Earned:  30 Minutes                                             Volunteer Hours Earned:  1 Hour

Education
Roberta Gordon presented an educational program on Native Americans in Ohio. She dressed as a Native American Woman and told us a story of how she and her people look to the land to provide plants for nourishment as well as healing.  She told us the story as she took a journey through the land near her home. Many plants along her journey were useful to her people for keeping their bodies healthy, healing ailments, survival, and food. She told a story passed down by her elders of why plants and people are good friends. It is told by the elders that the animals decided that people were not treating them right so they decided to give people disease. Then the plants came up with cures for those diseases. Some cures included using Cup plant in various ways to relieve a head cold, make a compress for wounds; Culver’s root for inducing vomiting; Jewelweed for treating fungal infections or relieve itching; Wild Cherry for a cough remedy; Blue Flag as a poultice for treating sores and bruises; and Pussy Willow for toothache. Other examples include using Wild Ginger for flavoring and Sugar Maple for hard cakes of sugar. In addition to using plants for food, medicine, personal and hygiene needs, they were used for rope, lodges, canoes, hunting and ceremonies.

Meeting
President Claire Loeffelman called the meeting to order at 7:30 PM.

Secretary's Report
The February Meeting Minutes were approved as changed by the membership. The minutes will be changed to reflect the contest of “Throwing the Trowel” during McCloud Park work days is won by the person who can throw the trowel into a box.

Treasurer's Report
Audrey Hall gave the treasurer's report. We took in $120 for Adopt-A-Pot and $150 for Garden Tour. Audrey also reported that the Finance Committee has created procedures for requesting use of OSU Development Funds.

Timekeeper's Report
Debbie Brown will be our new Timekeeper.

Claire discussed that we may look at changing the way we record our hours, if we can find an easier way to record as well as report the hours.  However, nothing will be done to change the way we record hours before May 1, 2006.

Everyone was reminded to input their hours on-line or turn in the hard copy sheets. If you need your user ID and password contact George and he will give them to you.

Old Business

Member Directory Update
George passed around the member directory in the meeting again to make sure he was getting updated member information before a new member directory is created.   The new directory will be published soon.

Monthly Newsletter
Claire asked everyone if they prefer to get information through a newsletter once a month with formal articles or to receive information as it is available. The majority decided they wanted information as it is available (meaning a formal newsletter will not be published monthly). This information will be sent via e-mail.

Master Gardener Library
Audrey Hall spoke about a project she and Bonnie Lowery have been working on to catalog the items in our Master Gardener Library. They have put items on a spreadsheet and created a sign-out sheet. This will allow us to better track items being borrowed and returned to the library. There are over 550 items in the library. Once Audrey and Bonnie get the project completed they will let us know. The library is located in George's Office.

Legacy Garden
John Walkup spoke about the Legacy Garden. It was started with the Class of 2001 at our old building and we have many of the plants from the original garden available to use at our new location. We will also consider using new plants that were not in the original garden. The Class of 2005 (with the assistance of some existing members) will take on the project to design and install the new Legacy Garden.  John will let the group know when he needs more volunteers.

McCloud Park
First work day for 2006 will be April 8 from 9 – 12.  As the first spring clean up it will be a big day with lots to do to get the park ready for the growing season. Come prepared to work by bringing your gloves, garden tools, and bags.

Adopt-A-Pot
Cindy Shuster gave an update. The flowers are ordered. Planting day will be May 20 at 9 am.  We need volunteers to assist 4-H youths with planting the pots. After the potting party everyone gathers for a pizza party.  If you are interested please let Cindy know.

Photo Contest
Jill Ricker asked everyone to be sure to take pictures throughout the year. We will have 3 themes in the contest this year:  Landscapes, Close-up of Plants, and Nature Involved with Gardens. The pictures need to be prints (not sent electronically).  The pictures have to be taken between December, 2005, and September, 2006. Pictures will be turned in at the September meeting, voting will take place at the October meeting and awards will be given at the November Awards Banquet. We can submit as many as we want in as many categories as we want. Plus, we get volunteer hours for the time you spend taking the photos. The photo contest does not need volunteers at this time.

Garden Tour
Marsha Kiss gave an update on the Garden Tour. They need people to volunteer to work at the garden sites. Also, volunteers are needed to create big containers of interesting plants to display. We can create information sheets providing information on the plants used in the container.  If anyone dropped off sponsorship information to merchants please follow-up with them to see if they are interested in being a sponsor. We also need volunteers to work on ideas for door prizes.

Plant Sale
Nancy Mead gave an update and reminded everyone to start thinking about plants they want to donate to the plant sale.   We need a volunteer to do advertising. The sale will be held August 26 from 8:00 AM till sold out.

Senior Fair
Marsha Kiss discussed the Council on Aging and their Senior Fair.  Master Gardeners set up a booth last year and participated. Various agencies and community groups are involved. It will be held May 9.

Union County Earth Day
Roberta Gordon spoke about the 2006 Event.  It will be held on April 22 from 9 - 3 and will be held indoors this year. We participated last year and it provides an opportunity to talk with the community about our group and to provide education.   If you are interested let Roberta know.

Leaping Frog
The frog is still hanging out and was not present at the March meeting.

Coordinator's Report
George discussed a plant list of perennials that he passed around.  In addition to our plant sale, we at times may need perennials for various projects. George passed out copies of the list.  If you have extras of a plant on the list that you would be willing to donate check it off and give the form to George.  This is a method of tracking what we have available. Remember this is for plants above and beyond what is donated to the plant sale.

We also discussed if you have information for the group and you want to send an e-mail out you can do so without going through George or Claire first.

Volunteer Opportunities:
  • Speakers Requested
  • Richwood Garden Club
  • Harold Lewis School - 3 to 5 year olds. There are about 50 children total and there would be at least 2 sessions in early April and late April.
  • Perennial Garden Design
  • MRDD Home on 5th Street desires a perennial garden design for an area in front of the home. They would also like someone to prepare material to explain how to plant the items in the design.
If you are interested in any of these volunteer opportunities let George know.
