Master Gardeners Earth Day 2006 Report, By Roberta Gordon, Chair

Education
George McVey presented a program on the Emerald Ash Borer (EAB). George started the program by showing a DVD called “The Green Menace” that described the discovery of the pest as well as the spread and damage caused by the pest to date. George also shared education kits prepared by the Michigan State University that showed a dead EAB specimen as well as sections of Ash wood showing the damage and exit holes the borer makes. The natural spread or movement of the EAB is slow with the pest moving about ½ mile each year. People may be the largest contributor of the spread of EAB through movement of ash tree products (such as branches, logs, woodchips, nursery stock and firewood). Firewood seems to be a key in helping to control the pest. Once a tree is attacked more of the bugs come to the injured tree and work together. The mortality rate of an ash tee that has been attacked is 100%. What can we do as Master Gardener’s?  George said we can spread the word about EAB, don’t move firewood and educate others to do the same, educate the public, plant replacement trees.

Dublin Recreation Center

We will work with the Dublin Recreation Center to facilitate classes for Spring 2007.  We will need to have a meeting in September/October to discuss what we will offer and give the information to the Rec. Center to get into the Spring Program.

Legacy Garden
John Walkup was having a meeting with those working on the garden immediately following the July MG meeting. The garden design would be discussed.

Plant Sale
Kathy Altizer spoke about the sale. She handed out poster material and flyers. A sign-up sheet for volunteers was passed around for Friday night set-up and Saturday (2 shifts).  Nancy Mead will lead the plant pricing on Friday night.  We need to let Kathy know what plants we are bringing to the sale.  At the July meeting, she still needed 5 more cashiers and 1 person to do the raffle.  Kathy will send e-mail reminders of key information.  She also reminded everyone to label their plants

Garden Tour
Karen Mikols spoke about the 2006 Garden Tour.  570 tickets were sold by the end of the day.  58 volunteers worked on the day of the tour. The after tour went well. Thank you notes have been sent to the contributors. Sixty-five attended the pre-tour, this included MG’s guests, and homeowners.  Twenty people marked on their tickets when they turned them in that they want to be Master Gardeners.  Evaluation forms will be e-mailed to the garden chairs to gather feedback. They need to turn them in to George or Mim.

A wrap-up party is being planned for sometime in September.  Most likely it will be held on a Sunday evening.  Little Tony’s Pizza has a room we can use.  Details will be sent out later.

We will need new chairpersons for the 2007 Garden Tour.  Mim and Karen have decided to pass the tour along to someone else.  We need to pick the gardens for 2007 early this fall.

Leaping Frog
The frog was present but Patsy was on vacation.  The frog will hang out with George in the Coordinator’s Office until next month.

Coordinator’s Report
The plants for the final plantings of the building landscape plans will be delivered September 8. George needs assistance planting on Saturday, September 9. That is the same day as Festifair.  If you are interested in helping, let George know.

New Business

Festifair
Marsha Kiss spoke about Festifair.  It will be held on September 9.  She sent around a sign-up sheet for volunteers.  She needs help to set-up, during the fair, and for clean-up.  She will have more information at the August meeting.

State Conference
The Master Gardener State Conference will be held September 21 - 23 in Chillicothe.

Focus Group
Claire spoke about conducting a focus group to discuss various items and set some direction for our group.  She plans to schedule it for the Fall after the plant sale.  Potential subjects could be: number of volunteer hours required, requiring each new class to work at McCloud for a specific number of hours, outreach/community education, hiring speakers for community education.

Miscellaneous:
Charita Cooper and Kristie Garner talked about their work with COYC on their garden. The garden is designed for therapy for the youth. They would like to have help from others who have more knowledge in vegetable gardening.  Some of the vegetables need to be thinned out.  It looks like it could be an on-going project.  If you would like to help, you can go at any time as long as you contact Vikki Jordan to let her know when you want to come over to help.  You can reach her at vikki.jordan@earthlink.net.  A suggestion was made to form a committee to plan the project for next year.  Planning should begin this Fall.

Eunice Hornsby suggested that as we plant the Legacy Garden or other areas in the future to consider that as an opportunity to do some community education.  We could hire a speaker to come in and give an educational talk then allow the participants to put what they learned to practice by planting items.  The September 9 plantings could be a good opportunity.  Claire and Marsha will discuss.

August Meeting:  The Great Tomato Fest.
NOTE:  The meeting will begin at 6:30 PM

Master Gardeners Earth Day 2006 Report
 By Roberta Gordon, Chair

Committee Members:
Dorothy Coleman, Roberta Gordon, Barb Jackson, Joanna Keiser, Kim Main, Barb Ramm,

Our theme was “Earth Friendly Gardening”

The Booth was decorated with fresh flowers and blooming branches and tables were covered with GREEN table cloths.

Members created display boards featuring:
  • Integrated Pest Management
  • Value of Trees to the earth/how to plant
  • Water Conservation
  • Native Plants and Invasive Plants
Information/Brochures free to public:
  • Master Gardener program including garden tour and plant sale
  • Ohio Butterfly booklets
  • Monarch Butterfly Coloring Sheets
  • OSU Facts Sheets on native plants, trees, IPM
Demonstrations and hands on for youngsters:  toad abodes and making bird treats

There were fun giveaways to visitors to the booth.

Continuously ran the DVD of the 2005 Garden Tour.

MG’s donated 2 gifts to be used as door prizes.  Two committee members won a door prize!

The Earth Day event was held inside at Karen’s Banquet Hall and was well attended.

Note:  I am hopeful that the Master Gardeners group continues to participate in events such as Earth Day.  I believe that gardeners have always played an important role in preserving the earth and, in the future, our role will become critical as a way of assuring biodiversity of plants as well as the animal species that are dependent upon our “green” spaces.
