A big thanks to B Wade for sharing his
home and assisting J Westfall at our Tool Clinic. J Westfall, thanks
for the education on how to care for and sharpen our tools.
In the absence of the president and vice president,
B Winner, Secretary, called the meeting to order. The June secretary’s
report was approved and the treasurer’s report was approved as read by
M McDonald. She requests that the person who left a receipt for $10.23
at the Extension Office to contact her.
The following announcements were presented:
Seed Technology, a local company, has seed for our projects; L McConnell
is going to the Broadleaf Weed I.D. clinic on August 9 near Toledo, if
interested in attending, please let her know; Green County Master Gardeners
are having their Garden Tour August 20 and we’re invited to attend; there
is an Open House August 18 at Utzinger Gardens; Field Days are August
4-5 in Springfield; there is a Residential Landscaping Seminar in Clermont
County September 6; Master Gardeners may pick up their green folders
and other items at the meeting or the Extension Office; updates to the
MG directory were passed around (please continue to give these to B Winner
for typing and sharing), apparel orders need to be in by August 4; A McElfresh
will be in the Demolition Derby at the Union County Fair on Sunday; P Herrmann
continues to update our Website, have you visited it lately?
The following need to give a progress report to
the Extension Office and the next meeting: all Tour materials need to be
turned in to T Carpenter or A McElfresh and evaluations need to presented
to the Extension Office, (a reminder was given to that Garden Coordinators
need to send thank you notes to the garden owners and their committee);
Banquet Committee, we need your report with evaluations; B Smith prepare
to pass your Leaping Frog Award and get with B Gardner to record the location
of the award; R George progress report for the Union County Historical
Society; Committee report for the Union County Veterans Memorial landscape
plan; “A Day in the Park” committee report with evaluations; K Long for
Farmer’s Market; 4-H judging at Union County Fair committee; Unionville
Center Beautification Judging report for July and August; C Dally and C
Loeffleman have created a sheet to assist with Hortline, these should be
available for August workers.
G McVey is on vacation so J Westfall requested
that each Master Gardener stop by McCloud Park when in town to do some
deadheading and weeding as needed. C Stolte has suggested that a
children’s garden be developed in the back section, this was tabled until
next meeting. J Evans comments that the Committee should to
be congratulated on the great looks and presentation of McCloud Park.
J Westfall requests that volunteers come one hour
ahead of time at the next meeting to deadhead and weed at the Presbyterian
Church.
C McMahan reports that the Richwood Fairgrounds
has not decided where they’d like a landscape plan developed and the new
the new building is not completed. They requested that the MGs have
a booth at this Fair but MGs turned this down.
Volunteers are needed, McConnell reminds us that
here is your chance to get some hours:
- Hotline, please call Marie to
schedule your dates and get a key for Saturday hours
- Committee to visit ABE Center, Toledo, and Clark
County Extension for suggestions to develop a Hotline
training program for April 2000
- Need close-up photos of McCloud plants for “One
to Grow On” newspaper article
- Contact S Law at 614-645-1529 to attend “Project
Learning Tree” August 5 (children’s gardening projects)
-MGs to place bouquets of flowers (each labeled
with botanical and familiar names) in Post -Offices and other public buildings
of Union County compliments of the MGs
- Committee to develop landscape plan for Post
Office - September deadline
- Help with East Elementary landscape garden with
kids, can work till 6:00 p.m. evenings
- Help Worknet person begin greenhouse on Westlake
Lee Road (needs guidance)
- Committee for Greens, Gifts, Goodies (November)
- Recruitment committee for MG school
- It has been decided that we’ll develop our own
MG school separate from Delaware County, a committee is needed to help
plan the agenda, speakers, place, dates and times.
- Write an article on “How to Save Seed”
-Don’t forget to pass out flyers to homeowners
with great looking garden, helps us recruit
- A committee to help select next year’s gardens
for the tour is needed.
- Our coordinator needs help with filing in the
office. Can be done at any time.
C McMahan suggested that the MGs buy
a wheeled cart for use at the shows and meetings to move the materials
we require for meetings. This was approved.
L McConnell invites us to make the August meeting
the “Great Tomato Festival”. Bring your sample tomato on a paper
plate to be judged. Categories can include roma, cherry, pear, slicing
and certificates of participation and ribbons for perhaps bumpiest, smallest,
biggest, reddest and most perfect. Collect some favorite tomato recipes
to share.
McDonald reminds us to turn in our hours monthly.
This meeting is worth one hour each for volunteer and for education.
Winner adjourned the meeting for the tool clinic
with a reminder to contact the Extension Office to volunteer for one or
more of the committees listed above. Your help is needed.
