Minutes of the
Master Gardeners of Union County
Vice President, Marsha Kiss, called the meeting to order at 7 pm and welcomed everyone back after the holiday break. She introduced Jason Gardner who presented the education portion of the meeting. Education Jason spoke about his non-profit organization, Mid Ohio Organized Disc Golf. He spoke about building a Frisbee (or Disc) golf course in Marysville. Jason stated that the course is located in South Park behind Mill Valley. It is expected to be open in the spring. Frisbee or Disc golf is played much like regular golf in that it has 9 or 18 “holes”. The holes consist of a tee (cement pad) and a basket with green space in between just like a fairway in conventional golf. The object is to get the Frisbee into the basket. All players in a group throw from the tee towards the basket. Players continue to take turns throwing their discs until all players in the group have their Frisbees in the basket. Then the group continues to the tee of the next hole. All throws are accumulated and the winner is the player with the fewest throws when the round is finished. Jason presented this information to the group and asked for Union County Master Gardeners to be involved in creating a landscape plan and planting ideas for the course. He stated the city has agreed to maintain the course, however, he does not know if that includes watering landscaping beds. He wants plantings designed for the walkway to each tee, around the cement tee boxes, around benches at strategic resting points around the course and possibly at various points in the course to provide an obstacle or hazard in the playing of the course. No vote was taken on whether the group plans to take this on as a project. Secretary’s Report There were no changes or corrections to the minutes of the October 2005 meeting and they stood approved as submitted. Treasurer’s Report Audrey Hall gave the treasurer’s report. We received a $125 check back from the Master Gardener State Conference in 2005. We had donated the money but they did not need it so they sent it back to us. Audrey reminded all committee leads or chairpersons that they need to have reimbursement request forms filled out before she can reimburse you for expenses. She also spoke about the OSU Development Fund. Donations can be made into the fund, such as if a company matches funds of employee donations they can donate to the development fund. It is available for us to use as we need it. We are considering ideas of how the funds can be used. Timekeeper’s Report Phil Jackson reminded everyone the year ends on April 30. Be sure to input your hours or get your hours sheets to him by then to make sure your hours are counted. Old Business Audit Mary McDonald conducted an audit report for the time period of November 1, 2004, to October 31, 2005. All records are accounted for and no errors or discrepancies were found. Garden Tour Miriam Carson reported on the first garden tour meeting of the year which was held just prior to the MG meeting. The theme “A Palette of Urban Gardens” was chosen. All 8 gardens are in the Green Pastures subdivision. The price will be the same as 2005 and tour will run from 1 pm to 5 pm on Sunday, July 9. Miriam also reported that they still need 1 more garden chair. The committee will be contacting garden related businesses to ask if they wish to be a sponsor of the tour or want to advertise in the program. Plant Sale No report Adopt-A-Pot No report Legacy Garden John Walkup and George requested help in designing, installing and maintaining the garden. Puppet Show Jill Ricker announced that she needs to step down as the chairperson of this committee and asked for a volunteer or volunteers to take over as chair. She has contacts ready to go to get back into several of the schools. Photo Contest Jill encouraged everyone to keep taking pictures, even in winter. Leaping Frog The frog is still hibernating and was not present at the January meeting Coordinator’s Report George reported that the new Master Gardener class will start January 31. As of the January meeting he expected 13 people to be in the class. George needs monitors for the classes. He needs at least 2 per class to help out and you receive volunteer hours for assisting. You may also attend a class and receive educational hours. George also discussed the newsletter will be produced monthly. He is seeking volunteers to help with the newsletter, write articles and make contributions. Carol Allen-Rasoul will still put it together. He also sent out a list of volunteer opportunities in e-mail plus he passed around the volunteer opportunity book at the meeting. He also discussed that the Union County Master Gardener brochure was developed in either 1999 or 2000 and he would like to get it updated. Deena Newell said she would work on it but she would like to have help from other master gardeners. George also talked about the Adopt-A-Pot Project. Many of the whiskey barrels used for the project are in need of repair or replaced. We also had several situations where the business owners did not maintain the pots in 2005, so that causes a situation where one or two look good but others do not. George expressed an idea of investing in larger containers but buying fewer of them. For example, we could place 4 large containers at the four corners in downtown Marysville. It would be easier to plant and easier to maintain. George also discussed the Leaping Frog Award. He suggested putting it on our web site. He would like to see the recipient or a volunteer to write about the frog’s adventures each month. He announced that Marie Bouic sent a thank you card for the flowers she received and Laura Pakis sent a thank you note for inviting her to the recognition banquet. George announced that the Dublin Recreation Program was looking to the Union County Master Gardeners to provide some informational talks as part of their Spring/Summer programs. Barbara Jackson volunteered to speak about vegetable gardening and Roberta Gordon volunteered to talk about native plantings. George sent out a list of perennials needed for the building planting plan for the south portion of the building and asked if we had those plants in our gardens, if we could provide plantings. The South section of the building has been prepped with compost and is ready to go for planting this spring. The Northeast section has not been started yet because we are waiting for new drain tile to be installed. George also asked for discussion about providing an information booth at the Union County Fair. Did we get enough traffic to make it worth having the booth? He suggested that either instead of the fair or in addition to it we could get involved in Festifair. We have had a booth there before and the traffic was excellent. We also discussed if we do the fair again we should ask for a better location. George asked for a volunteer to coordinate and communicate a schedule of activities over the next few months. It will require someone to research various gardening activities (shows, programs, educational reviews, etc) that are happening in the area. If you are interested George announced a landscape design course being offered in the Bowling Green area for $75 on Saturday, February 18. If you are interested George has the details. New Business Budget Review Audrey Hall announced that the Budget Committee met in December. They estimated income at $9,150 with estimated expenses of $9,150 for 2006. Project chairs can not go over budgeted expenses. Audrey will give the chairs updates on their balance on a regular basis. Education Marsh Kiss discussed that she would like us to get back to having speakers at every meeting for education. She requested volunteers for an education committee for the master gardeners but also to plan educational activities for the community. If you wish to speak at a meeting let Marsha know. Web Site The web site needs updated. We need help in designing it and maintenance. Other Business The meeting closed with a viewing of a DVD that Nancy Wells put together with pictures from the Recognition Banquet in November. Members in attendance:
