President, Ann Allen called the meeting to order
at 7 PM on February 26 at the Marysville Public Library. Three members of
the new class were welcomed to the meeting.
Education: Mary Kinsey presented a 30-minute talk on growing orchids in the home. Treasurer: Al Burnard gave a report of the treasury. He also announced that his employer, Verizon, has made a donation to the OSU Foundation in the name of Union County Master Gardeners in honor of Al’s volunteer work. Al reminded members to complete a reimbursement form anytime an expense is incurred for a project. Timekeeper: Nancy Mead reminded members to record their volunteer and educational hours. She also asked that she be notified anytime a members has problems recording their hours electronically. John Hixon: reported from the OSU Extension Staff on the following:
Old Business: Garden Tour: Brian Wade discussed the need for volunteers to help with the Garden Tour. He announced that McCloud Park would be added to the gardens to be toured. Ideas for a possible theme were discussed. Carola McMahon reported that the Junior Master Gardeners are willing to volunteer at one of the gardens. McCloud Park: George McVey announced the first workday at McCloud will be April 5 at 9 am – bring pruners, rakes, trowels, gloves & knee pads. He asked members to submit ideas for a new feature to be added to the park this year. Adopt A Pot: Audry Hall announced plans well underway for the project. Cutherts will donate wave petunia seedlings, FFA will grow them in their greenhouse, Scotts will supply the Miracle Grow. Need to replenish the soil in the pots this year. Ideas for a vegetable companion plant were discussed. Audry moved that the organization purchase Ohio flags at 80 cents each to adorn the pots in honor of Ohio’s Bicentennial. Carola McMahon seconded the motion. Motion passed. Audry reported that Bushong’s would sell us ornamental cabbage and kale at wholesale cost for the fall plantings. International Conference: Sharon Wade reported that the order is ready to send for 1,000 seed packets to be distributed at the International Conference in June. Union County Master Gardeners will be imprinted on each seed packet. John Hixon suggested that Sharon check with Marianne Riofrio about how the seed packets will be distributed. Historical Society Heritage Garden: Barbara Ramm reported plans are underway for the heritage garden and asked for men volunteers to help prepare beds this spring. She announced that she would be a speaker for the Union County Homemakers “Spring Fling” on March 8. Ohio Bicentennial Celebration: Carola McMahon announced she is chairing the Richwood celebration on June 22. Brody Rockenbaugh will set up an educational display on Native Plants. Newsletter: Carol Rasoul asked members to send her items for publication in the newsletter. She will publish a letter every other month. Ann Allen asked members for ideas of something the group could do to honor the 3 years of service Laura McConnell provided as our Coordinator. Ideas suggested were: a plaque or a sculpture or fountain at McCloud Park. Chris Burnard will check on a sculpture and Susan Lehman will check on a fountain and report to the next meeting. New Business April Recognition: Ann asked for volunteers to work on a committee to plan the April meeting where the new class will be recognized. John Hixon will check on the availability of the Millcreek Township Hall at Watkins. Leaping Frog: The Leaping Frog will remain with Barbara Ramm another month as the new recipient was not present at the meeting. Speaker Request: Karen Long announced that PE RI has requested a Master Gardener for a speaker at the their April 2 meeting. Volunteers should contact Karen. Karen also announced that forms were being circulated for members to sign up for standing committees. A request for a donation of mulch for the Christian Academy was denied. Next Meeting: Chris Burnard will present “Dye Plants” for the educational portion of the next meeting to be held on March 26 at 7 PM at the Marysville Public Library.
