Minutes of the
Master Gardeners of Union County
Vice President, Marsha Kiss, called the meeting to order at 7 PM. She introduced Al Burnard who presented the education portion of the meeting. Education Al spoke about how to read seed and gardening catalogs. Al began by reminding us to know our garden site conditions. Is it in sun or shade? What is our hardiness zone? And to keep in mind the soil Ph range when considering plants. Almost all catalogs have similar elements or descriptors for each plant, they just differ in how they layout the information. Most of them will give an overall description of the plant, the zones in which it grows, height/width of the plant at maturity, soil condition/Ph, sun exposure, bloom time, disease/pest resistance, and plant characteristics (such as bush, vining, etc). Descriptors and requirements can vary for the same plant in different catalogs. Al also reminded us to be sure to check to see what area the plants or seeds are coming from because if they are well outside of our area they may not do well in our area. Al closed by giving us information on Cyndi’s Catalog on Garden (www.gardenlist.com), a web site that is a one stop to find all mail-order gardening catalogs. Secretary’s Report There were no changes or corrections to the minutes of the January 2006 meeting and they stood approved as submitted. Treasurer’s Report Audrey Hall gave the treasurer’s report. The OSU Development Fund has $1,454.97. Audrey also reviewed the Project Budget Procedures set by the Finance Committee. The Procedures are included in full as an attachment at the end of the minutes. Timekeeper’s Report Phil Jackson reported that there have been some computer glitches recently on the system. If you have been trying to input your volunteer or education hours and you experience difficulty it may have been due to the system problem. He has been informed that they should be fixed now. In addition, Phil and George reported that in the past when we added up hours for tracking yearly totals the process was very manual and time consuming. They believe they have found a solution which should make this process much easier in the future. Finally, Phil announced he will need to step down as Timekeeper as he has accepted a job out of state. He expressed his appreciation of being associated with the Union County Master Gardeners and will remember this positive experience. Phil, we wish you well. Old Business Member Directory Update George passed around the member directory in the meeting again to make sure he was getting updated member information before a new member directory is created. If you have not been able to attend a meeting and you have had any information changes since the directory was distributed last year, please contact George with you correct information. Also, if you are not receiving e-mails please contact Marsha Kiss or Drudy Yoakam. Monthly Newsletter February newsletter has been sent out. Any input you have on formatting, articles or simply ideas to make it even better please contact Marsha Kiss. Disc Golf George talked with Jason Gardner concerning the disc golf course and got clarification on what involvement he was requesting from the Master Gardeners. Our initial involvement would include the #1 tee only. Possibly later we could work on other areas of the course. George asked the group to consider creating a landscape plan for the first tee, possibly offer demos on how to plant or other community based education. The project will not include buying plants, installation or maintenance. A motion was initiated, seconded, and passed to include this as a new project. Dublin Recreation Program Trevor Greg from the Dublin Recreation Program had asked us to be involved in their spring/summer program in January. However, we received very short notice before their brochures needed to be printed so we did not get scheduled for the spring/summer programs. We can still get involved in the fall program. If you are interested doing a class or demo let George know. McCloud Park We meet the second Saturday of the month from 9 – 12. This spring we will need to clean up, divide several plants and install annuals. After our work time we finish each session with a contest “Throw in the Trowel”. Whoever can through a trowel into a box gets a prize!* In 2006, we will look at ways we can refresh and revitalize the landscape. George is seeking volunteers to look at the landscape plan and make proposals for changes or updates. Adopt-A-Pot In 2006, we will not have access to free plants so we will need to buy the plants. The price per barrel will increase from $10.00 - $15.00. George has proposed to the business owners only planting the barrels once and not doing a second planting in the fall. Another potential change for 2006 is a possible addition of prizes for the best looking pots to help promote maintaining the plantings. The barrels are generally planted in late May with Master Gardeners and 4-H'ers working together to plant. A pizza party is held at Pizza Hut after the event. George has spoken with the City of Marysville about grouping the cement containers on the corners of the square for more impact. Puppet Show Still looking for volunteers to help Leaping Frog The frog is still hibernating and was not present at the February meeting Coordinator’s Report George welcomed Barbi Conaway from the 2006 Master Gardener Class to our meeting. There are several requests for speakers from our organization to talk to various community groups about gardening and the Union County Master Gardener Association. If you are interested, please contact George. George would like to see us begin a speakers bureau with several volunteers signed up to be speakers, one or two people to research the subjects for the speakers, and one or two people to create the presentation materials. New Business Upcoming Events A list of events was handed out at the meeting and they included:
McCloud Park Enhancements Karen Long talked about ideas for enhancements to the park and asked for input. Discussion centered around doing something new and interesting so the park doesn’t become stale. Several ideas were discussed including water features, topiary and new plant material with a theme (example given was a theme of “Unusual and Exotic” at Inniswood). Also discussed was putting together a program for the group on the history of the park. Members in attendance:
