Minutes of the Master Gardeners of Union County
Education Hours: .5 Hour                                                         Volunteer Hours Earned:  .5 Hour

President, Marsha Kiss called the meeting to order.

Secretary Report: Last month's (July 2007) minutes are on the web. No changes were noted. The minutes were approved.

Treasurer's Report: Audrey Hall gave the Treasury Report. Expenses were $25.00 People and Plants, $190.18 Plant Sale. The current balance stands at  $6,353.55.

Old Business:

CYOC- Eunice Hornsby gave an update. The group had met last night to plan out the rest of the season. The vegetable group is planning to do an evaluation of what was planted and what should be changed for next year. They will have a few more work weekends and will have a final garden clean up day in October. The flower group has the flower beds prepared with donated Com-TILl and leaf compost. Al Burnard had drawn the bed design and a list of plants was passed around looking for donations from MGs.  Please let Eunice know if you have plants available. The planting date is set for Sept 9 at the CYOC.

Plant Sale- Nancy Mead reminded everyone that the plant sale is this upcoming August 25. Friday, you can bring plants anytime as Nancy Mead and Mary McDonald are setting up the tables around 9am on Friday morning and plan on being there most of the day.  Donated plants must be labeled and if anyone coming to help set up and has available garden carts, bring them with you to help move around plants.  Friday night there will be a potluck and breakfast for workers on Saturday.  Workers for Saturday should arrive no later than 7:00 AM. We also have  a new sign , thanks to Nancy Mead,  with interchangeable letters for this year and future years.

McCloud Park- Karen Long thanked everyone that came to the last work session. There was much weeding and deadheading accomplished.  There will be some fall sessions coming up to continue garden maintenance and to bring in perishable bulbs.  Patsy Bushdorf shared a new idea that she and Karen are suggesting for next year.  They would like to divide the park into different areas and MGs would take on a part of the garden to plan, plant and maintain during the season.  The segments would be smaller and manageable.  MGs could fit the maintenance into their own schedule. Please let Patsy or Karen know if you are interested in taking on a part of the garden.  There are all types of areas, shade, sun, roses, wet, dry. This could help give ownership of the project to more MGs.  Patsy also shared that they will be working with Scheiderer Greenhouse to grow the plants next year, rather than the city greenhouse.

Mary Ann Haynes shared that Amber Haynes had been nominated as a top 5 National Young Retailer Award.  She received the Community Relations Award at the ceremony.

MG Self Tour of Gardens- Chris Burnard reported that they had a good turnout. Attendees toured 4 gardens Tuesday night and 3 gardens Thursday night.  It was suggested that we may plan to organize this once a month next year.  Those attending can count 2.5 hours for each night for Education hours.

August Wine Tour- Mary McDonald reported that we had good participation in this event. It was very educational tour of the vineyards and the farm.  Those attending can receive 1 hour of educational time for the event.

Governor Mansion  - Those attending this event can count the Mansion tour as 1.5 hours of education and the Topiary Gardens at the Deaf School as .5 hour of education hours.  Mary mentioned that the Governor's Heritage Gardens are maintained, only by donations and volunteers.  It has no state budget. Eunice Hornsby moved to donate $50 to the Heritage Foundation for the Governor's Gardens.  Patsy Bushdorf seconded.  The motion was approved.  The address for donations will also be made available on the website if others would like to donate.

Farmer's Market- Marsha Kiss reported that the August 11 event had over 1000 visitors and Tom McNutt was also in attendance.   The group also sold 12 plants for a total of $12.00 toward the plant sale proceeds and had educational information displays available to the public.

Coordinator's Report- George shared that the Master Gardener Merchandise ordering system is changing.  The new system will allow you to order independently via email.   The orders will accumulate and then we will be notified to pick up the order at Springfield.  George will investigate how we are to use this new system and more details on the process.

New Business:

Faye Cox has agreed to coordinate the Annual Banquet and she will have an organizational meeting after tonight's meeting.

Joe Johnson suggested MG consider attending the upcoming Farm Science Review in early September.

The business meeting ended and we took some time to enjoy the potluck that members had brought in.

The educational portion of the meeting consisted of various members sharing their experiences with the seeds and equipment they had taken earlier in the year.  The theme was based around color.   Despite the dry summer, many members did have a wide range of produce to discuss.  Most agreed that the red tomato mulch and plastic watering device really did not work well nor did it produce any exceptional results.  Barbi Conaway brought in a wide range of tomatoes that she discussed.  She shared that she had got many of her plants at a plant swap in Hilliard in the May.  She said to check out http://www.gardenweb.com for future plant swap dates.

Next meeting: September  26 at the Agricultural Center at 7:00 p.m.
