The Grapevine
November, 2003
Many of our Grapevine
readers have an interest in fruit production. If you would like to receive
a periodic update on fruit production, contact the Extension Office at 937.644.8117
or 1.800.589.8584 or e-mail them at unio@postoffice.ag.ohio-state.edu
and ask to be added to the fruit news. It is being written
by Dr. Marcus Brown and Dr. Gary Gao. It contains a lot of practical information
for backyard fruit growers. It contains information on both tree and small
fruit.
This is a great
time to make a final fall clean up of your orchard. Clean up fallen
fruit, leaves and other waste in the orchard. Also make sure that grass and
weeds are cleaned up around your trees. If they are not, you will find
that voles, mice and rabbits are a lot more likely to damage the trunks of
your trees. This would also be a good time to make preparations for fertilizing
your fruit trees. You can evaluate your need for nitrogen by looking at the
terminal shoot growth and leaf color. The shoot length should be about 6-10
inches. Leaves should have been a normal green color. Other signs of
lack of nitrogen are a heavy June drop of fruit and smaller than normal fruit
size.
If you need more
information on fertilizing fruit trees, give us a call at the Extension Office.
