Spring Vegetable Planting

Union County Master Gardener Jean Zimmerman
Spring planting of vegetables can begin as soon as the ground has thawed and the soil is dry enough to be cultivated. Onion sets can be planted as early as March. Turnips, radishes and parsley can be seeded as soon as the garden plot is ready.

Lettuce, peas, and spinach should be planted in early April for best quality and highest yields. Beets and carrots can be seeded at the same time and, again, a few weeks later. Potatoes can be planted in April but need a more acidic soil than the other vegetables, to prevent damage from scab.

If hardy vegetables were started indoors, or were purchased, then can be transplanted out during April. Allow a few days for the plants to become accustomed to the intense outdoor light and chill otherwise they may be subject to transplant shock. Hardy transplants can include beets, broccoli, early cabbage and cauliflower, leeks, lettuce, and onions.

Crockett’s Victory Garden is one of several gardening books that lists vegetables to be seeded or transplanted, month by month, foa a climate similar to Ohio’s. A variety of fact sheets on raising vegetables are available at the Extension Office and on Ohioline at www.ohioline.osu.edu
