From time to time the Union County Master
Gardeners will submit plant information on locally visible plants to educate
the public on suitable plants and allow them to view the plants as they
grow. Our first plant review is by Master Gardener Carole Stolte.
Sedum ‘Autumn Joy’ (‘Herbstfreude’) can be viewed
in its winter appearance at McCloud Park which is located at the junction
of Fourth and Fifth Streets. It is an easily cultivated succulent
with year round interest. Attractive to butterflies. Zones
3-10.
APPEARANCE: 18" blue/green fleshy-leafed
plant with dome-headed pink flowers opening in August and turning to bronze
in fall.
CARE: Plant in well-drained soil in full
sun. This sedum tolerates drought conditions once it is established.
Pinch back growth in the spring to create a bushier plant with more flowers.
If it becomes crowded, dig out of the ground and divide the mass of plants
into smaller masses in the spring.
USES: Beds, borders, pots. Group
with daylilies or grasses. Blossoms are long lasting in a vase.
