 2007 Master Gardener Recognition Banquet Held

The Master Gardeners of Union County held their annual recognition banquet on Wednesday, November 7, 2007, at Der Dutchman Restaurant in Plain City. There were 40 Master Gardeners who received certificates of appreciation for achieving volunteer milestones.

Special awards were given to Mary McCord, Kathy Altizer, Patsy Bushdorf, Miriam Carson, Nancy Mead and Nancy Wells for most volunteer hours for 2006.

George McVey, Union County Master Gardener Coordinator and Mary McDonald, Laura Pakis Spirit Award of Excellence in Volunteerism

The Laura Pakis Spirit Award for Excellence in Volunteerism was presented the Mary McDonald. Mary was instrumental in arranging for 3 tours (Gardens in Northern Ohio, Governor’s Mansion and a local vineyard). Mary has been very active in our Plant Sale, McCloud Park and Veteran’s Memorial Projects.
The speaker for the evening was Kay Studar, who reviewed the Children’s Garden in Lima, Ohio, which has received state and national recognition. There are over 30 theme gardens on a half acre site devoted to children’s pleasures and education. Kay is the Master Gardener Coordinator and Horticulturist in Allen County.

Eunice Hornsby was selected by her peers as “Master Gardener of the Year” Eunice was the chairperson of the Central Ohio Youth Center Vegetable & Flower Garden. The garden was maintained and harvested by the youth under the guidance of the Union County Master Gardeners and Vikki Jordan, Central Ohio Youth Center Superintendant. This project was also selected as “Union County Master Gardener Project of the Year”.

Eight new certified Master Gardeners received their certificates at the recognition banquet on Wednesday, November 7.  These recipients have completed 50 hours of horticultural projects in the county.


The Master Gardener Offers horticulture advice and tips, focusing on current issues by volunteers who are with The Ohio State University Extension, Union County Master Gardener Program.
