In Union County, the Family Nutrition Program (FNP) helps limited resource individuals and families by offering programs in:
- Nutrition Training in which participants will learn to use the Food Guide Pyramid, a guide to daily food choices, as set by the United States Department of Agriculture.
- Meal Planning by learning to balance menus and plan recipes for low-cost meals that meet the requirements of the Food Guide Pyramid.
- Food Safety by discussing appropriate preparation and storage of foods to prevent food borne illnesses.
- Food Preparation which will teach basic food preparation skills needed to insure product satisfaction for easy, simple and nutritious meals.
- Shopping Skills which will provide budgeting tips for better management of food dollars so an individual may make informed decisions on time, effort and money.
The Family Nutrition Program (FNP) centers its teaching upon research-based information, such as the USDA's Dietary Guidelines and land-grant university research, including The Ohio State University and its Ohio State University Extension. Most of the programming is done through small class settings but may also include displays, and the distribution of newsletters and fact sheets. Class situations might include food or cooking demonstrations, recipe sampling, analyzing food labels or recipes, informational videos and educational material for home use. Audience participation is encouraged.
