Welcome to 4-H in the Classroom !
More and more elementary
and middle schools across Ohio are becoming involved in 4-H school enrichment
programs. Guided by OSU Extension personnel, students in the programs learn
difficult science concepts through a variety of hands-on activities, developing
valuable science skills as they apply science to real-life situations. The
programs are designed to enhance existing classroom science units.
Each 4-H school
enrichment program is supported by program-specific curriculum materials developed
by science educators at The Ohio State University. Each is targeted to meet
selected science proficiency goals identified in Ohio's State Science Competency
model.
Currently, three program topics
are being used in Union County schools: Go Plants!, The Incredible Egg, and
The Breads of Harvest. Other programs that are available include:
Rockets Away, Fishy Science, Beans about Water, and Weather Together.
Karen Gwilliams,
4-H program assistant for OSU Extension, Union County, leads the Union County
4-H school enrichment program. Currently Marysville, Fairbanks, and North
Union Elementary Schools along with St. Paul's and Trinity Lutheran Schools
have one or more classrooms involved in the program. If your classroom or
school is interested in participating in this program, Karen can be contacted
at 937-644-8117, 1-800-589-8584 or by e-mail at unio@postoffice.ag.ohio-state.edu.
