Enrollment & Dues
Final 4-H Enrollment
is due April 1. Early bird enrollment is due March 17, so your advisors will
be asking for your enrollment form well ahead of these dates. check out
the Family Guide for a list of possible projects. County 4-H dues are $5
this year. Your club may collect additional dues for club use.
Club Program and other
4-H Information for the Year
Each club produces some type of program booklet or page for the year listing
meetings, due dates, demonstrations, etc. Make sure you keep your copy in
a safe place. Also, your advisors will be handing out many other pages of
important information for the year at your first or second meeting. Keep
all these papers in a folder or notebook, you will need to refer to them
throughout the year.
Your advisor will
soon be working with you to determine what Project Books you need based
on the projects you have chosen. If you are taking a Special Interest Project,
look for the Yellow Project Guide
Sheet that is with your Project Book. This yellow sheet will give you
detailed information about completing your project.
If you are taking a livestock project, be sure to get a copy of the Livestock
Requirements Summery for your fair (Union
County/Richwood Fair). This page will remind you of the requirements
you need to meet if you want ot show an animal project at the fair.
Four project areas have significant updates this year. Even if you have
taken these projects in the past, you will need new project literature this
year.
- Goats - At last we have a new Goat Resource Manual
- Dogs - Dogs will
have a resource manual and new project designations. See the yellow guide
sheet in the Dog Resource Manual.
- Photography - All
3 books in the Photography series are new this year ($8/each)
- Small Animals - We have reorganized the information for Small Animal
Projects to make it easier to get what you need in one package.
Livestock Quality Assurance Education
If you are taking an animal project, you
will need to complete Livestock Quality Assurance Education to be eligible
to show at a fair. This is a requirement of the Ohio Department of Agriculture
and your Senior board board. See the flyer,
to see the options. Ask your advisor first, if you have questions.
4-H
Store
The 4-H Store, located in the 4-H Library at OSUE, has many new items in
stock. 4-H pencils, stickers, mugs, scrapbook paper, hats, thank you notes,
etc. If you are in need of a 4-H item to say thanks to a 4-H sponsor or
livestock buyer, the 4-H Store is the place to look!
Start NOW!
You do not have to wait
to start on a 4-H project. Many projects can be started now, and could be
completed before June. For example, if you are taking a nutrition
project....start trying those recipes in the project book now, no need to
wait. Animal project members can take the beginning project pictures needed,
save feed tags, order supplies needed, etc.
Activities
Here are a few highlights of upcoming 4-H Activities:
Demo Day ......................................June 20, 2008
Nearly everyone of you does a demonstration for your club. Polish it up
and bring it to Demo. Day for an opportunity to win some cold hard cash, yet
money! Ask your advisor how Demo. Day representatives from your club will
be selected.
For more information on Demo Day see
the following web site, http://union.osu.edu/4h/DemoDay.html
Lollipop Day..................................
April 25 or 26
A way your club can help let our
communities know that 4-H members are active in their neighborhood, and
help raise funds for our county 4-H program. Your club can sign
up for Friday night or Saturday morning.
4-H Camp will be held .......................June
24-28
Last year we had a full camp....254
of us! The big news about camp this year is that there will be a
new pool being built, replacing the 30 year old pool. We will be doing a
fund raiser to help pay for this enormous renovation project. See next item.

Be Cool for the Pool.....Saturday,
November 15
6 p.m.
The Camp Clifton Swimming Pool
is undergoing a $320,000 renovation in 2008. To help pay for the project,
we will be holding a fund raising event on November 15. The event
will include recognition of 4-H volunteers, Camp Clifton alumni and a Live
and Silent auction. Please consider creating or collecting an auction item
to contribute to this cause. You'll also be able to purchase tickets to
the event, if you want to join in the bidding wars. Your contribution will
be appreciated by campers who use the pool for the next many decades.
Digital Photo Contest
We know there are thousands of
pictures of 4-H activities taken every year. Enter your best shots in the
2008 photo contest. To view a flyer for details about this contest, "Click Here" and the chance to become a
"published" photographer.
Horses
Horse club members will
receive a booklet, from their advisors, with this year's Horse Project information
and dates. You can also visit the Union County Horse Club Web Site. Horse club members will also receive
information about the required Safety and Sportsmanship Program from advisors.
March 9 is the date.....it is required that you attend, if you intend
to participate with a horse.
Reminder: The only horse project that can be taken outside of a horse club
is Horseless Horse #173. If you want to take any other horse project, you
need to join a Horse Club.
Across County Lines Membership
If you live outside of
Union County, and want to join 4-H in Union County, you will need to apply
for a Cross County Lines Membership. These applications are approved/denied
on a case by case basis. A cross county line transfer is considered a permanent
transfer (you can't change in the future). The typical reason for joining
in a county other than were you live is that you live very close to a county
line and go to school in Union County. Click
Here for an application form. You only need to do this form once,
it covers your entire 4-H career once approved.
