Our Advisory Council remains committed to the philosophy that our Advisors set the example for 4-Her's by updating their knowledge and skills in working with youth annually.

Projects

4-H Project Library
There is a library of all project books available to members.  Encourage members who want to review a project book in-depth before making an enrollment decision to check out a project book.  Sign out is for one week.

2008 New Project Information
The most significant changes are projects this year in Dogs and Goats.  There is now a Goat Resource Handbook, much like we have in Sheep, Swine, Beef and Rabbits.  Every goat project member is going to need a copy of this new manual, designed to be used for many years.

Dog projects have been completely revised.  Dog projects will now have a Resource Handbook for project information, but will also still specify a project area such as Obedience, etc.  The old Dog Care project is now called You and Your Dog.  Explanations of the new Dog projects are included with each Dog Project and Record Book.

There is a new Llama & Alpaca project this year.

Advisor Worksheet for Project Literature
Christy has created a form to help you make sure you have the correct books for members when they sign up for a project.  To view this form, "Click Here".  She has also created a "Guide to Livestock Project Literature..... What books do I need?" to help members/advisors make sure that have the correct books.  To view this guide, "Click Here".

Activities

Here are a few highlights of upcoming 4-H Activities:

Demo Day ......................................June 20, 2008

Demo Day will be held June 20, 2008.  Each club is eligible to send 4 delegates to this contest. Distribute the Demo Day Flyer in your club and begin promoting this. One club last year had club members evaluate each club demonstration to select their delegates, this could be a good way to give a decision making role to members, and keep them paying attention to each demonstration.

For more information on Demo Day see the following web site, http://union.osu.edu/4h/DemoDay.html

Lollipop Day.................................. April 25 or 26
A way your club can help let our communities know that 4-H members are active in their neighborhood, and help raise funds for our county 4-H program.  Your club can sign up for Friday night or Saturday morning.

4-H Camp will be held .......................June 24-28
Last year we had a full camp....254 of us!  The big news about camp this year is that there will be a new pool being built, replacing the 30 year old pool. We will be doing a fund raiser to help pay for this enormous renovation project. See next item. To view more information about 4-H Camp "Click Here"

Be Cool for the Pool.....Saturday, November 15
6 p.m.

As part of our annual 4-H Banquet we will hold a fund raiser for the pool project, and do some looking back at 4-H Camp memories.  To raise funds we’ll hold a Silent and Live auction during our annual banquet.  Clubs and 4-H Friends can help by donating auction items.  See the Be Cool for the Pool flyer for details about this big event.

Digital Photo Contest
This year we are holding a photo contest to collect great digital photos of 4-H in action.  Winning photos may be used on our web site, in other 4-H promotional materials, and, a winning photo will be framed and offered in the Be Cool for the Pool auction on Nov. 15. Encourage your 4-H families to save those great shots and enter the contest by October 1. To view a flyer on this contest, "Click Here"

Camp Counselors Available to Visit Clubs

Last year seven 4-H clubs invited counselors to visit their club meetings to do some activities and promote and answer questions about camp.  The offer still stands.....if you’d like to have counselors visit a club meeting, call or email me at leeds.1@osu.edu for scheduling.

Countywide Cloverbud Club

Karen Gwillams and Christy Leeds serve as leaders of our Countywide Cloverbud Club for kids in grades K-2.  We meet monthly March through September.  If you have younger sibling family members attached to your club, let them know about this opportunity.  Information is available on our website or from Karen. For more information on Cloverbuds "Click Here"

Fair Related Notes

Union County Fair will again judge Special Interest projects on both Sunday and Monday, July 20 and 21.  Members can check their Yellow Project Guide sheet to see which day their project will be judged.

Clothing Judging for UC Fair will again be the Friday prior to fair on July 18.

There will not be a Pancake Breakfast at Richwood Fair this year, but there will be Pancakes flipping on Saturday morning July 26, during the Union County Fair.  The 4-H Advisory Council is going to take this event on by making their own pancakes this year.  New pancake breakfast hours will be 8 a.m. -10 a.m. so you won’t even have to rise as early to take advantage of 4-H Pancake Day.
